Sheath stud sizes

I have been thinking about studs for sheaths when you use them for retention straps and other purposes.

Right now I am using the 8mm button stud from Tandy ( #11310-02). I think it works great for the retention strap.

But I am curious about the sheaths that are sash style carry with the big studs. I don't have a lathe so I can't make my own, I was wondering what size works well for that style carry if I was to purchase button studs?

Brian, the only larger studs I've seen that are readily available come from Tandy. They have added several different sizes and finishes. All are priced ridiculously high for what you get and they seem to have gone to 100% screw back eliminating my favorite, the rivet back. I mention price because the old 1309 series (the original Sam Browne stud) started out at 50 cents and now retail at prices ranging from 3.29 to 5.99 with discounts based on whichever pricing level you happen to fit into. It doesn't make sense to me. Economy of scale would seem to dictate that the more you sell and then buy, the lower your wholesale price and should yield a lower retail price or at least a level retail price with more gross profit for Tandy.

Sorry for the epistle, but any way that's where you can find them.

The Sam Browne studs I bought a couple months back were rivet back, might be worth a call to them. Yep, they're expensive.I dont use them nearly as often because of that, when I tell a customer how much they cost me they tend to go snaps.

I hope they are not fazing them out, I dislike the screwback.

I still use the 1309 series which is almost the same as the 1311 series. Both sizes will work for retention strap and also serve well for just the sash sheath stop. If it is strictly a sash sheath with no retention strap you could step up in size just for looks.

Dwayne and Brian Check out "Rite-ON Screw Products". They are all screw back but the pricing is far better. This is the outfit Anthony found and told us about.

Just checked the Weaver catalog. They have them in: 5/32"@ .77 ea, 1/4" @ .81 each and 3/8" @ 1.26 each. Price goes down if you buy in quanity. These are for screwbacks. They have rivet backs in 9/32" @ 2.99 each.

I just buy the 1/4" size. They work for both retention (I use em on holsters and rifle scabbards) and for behind the belt/sash carry on sheaths. I've had some Tandy ones too and the screw on those do seem to be more pronounced then on the Weaver ones. This sheath was built this way. I also made a frog for it at the customer's request so that he could go with cartridge belt carry, sash carry or on his saddle using the frog and my saddle chinkasa as pictured here. The 1/4" stud works very well with the frog too.

For belt or sash carry I have had good luck with smaller size door cabinet knobs you can get at hardware stores. All are of course threaded with machine screws and not riveted.

I have only used the ones Paul mentioned, they have worked very well for me. Well priced and made a few hours away.

I haven't really looked into it much but I know some people use doll house door/cabinet knobs for studs. I've seen it mentioned a couple of times at another forum I visit. My concern would be strength and thread pitch. Would definitely want to make sure they are strong and use loc-tite.

Edit- just saw gregorio's reply. :)
