So first a little background.

I'm a long distance hiker about to embark on the CDT from Canada to Mexico this summer through Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico. It'll be through some of the most remote places I've traveled so far and I plan on carrying a respectable knife on this one. On both the AT and the PCT i carried a Leatherman Micra.

The more remote I travel the more well equipped I like to be. This constantly battles with my desire to be a lightweight, practical, and comfortable hiker.

I'm trying to decide how and where I want to carry a knife that will be on my person, yet still comfortable with my backpack on. Any suggestions on a low profile sheath or a alternate method of carry that will be comfortable while walking 25-40 miles a day (I'm worried about chaffing) and not be in the way of a hipbelt on a pack?

I could strap a knife to my shoulder strap, and i like to, but I'd rather have it on my person so that if i was ever separated from my pack I'd still have my knife.

Thanks for the help in advance.

My initial thought is if you keep the blade at about 4" in a good fitting drop belt loop that fits your belt properly, you won't feel it's there.
Good luck on your trip, sounds like great fun.

You can do something like this maybe?I made this for a fellow who was doing something like you.He was hiking the Old Oregon Trail.

As you can see the knife can be worn Horizontal,Vertical,On a Pack strap,On your side,or behind the Back.
