Sheathed fixed blade for dining out

I'm looking for a fixed blade with a sheath that would be suitable
for dining out.

Basically I'm looking for:

- Elegance
- stainless steel
- A 'traditional' look (no tactical shapes)
- SHARPNESS!
- A sheath

I already own a Mora Companion MG in stainless, but I don't find the color of the handle or the sheath elegant enough for dining out. I do love it's meat slicing abilities though!

Thanks for your input!

Check out the Bark River Gunny at KSF. You can take you pick of sub styles and steels. A2 Tool Steel - not quite stainless, but I own one and it's sweet. Or pick 3V, CPM3V, S35VN, or Elmax. A four inch blade with a sheeple friendly sheath.

Personally I don't think you are going to achieve what you are trying to get. You're not going to carry a fixed blade in a restaurant and not draw attention even if the sheath was pink with a pink knife handle. I don't think a good fixed blade exist for dining out. And definitely definitely not in San Jose CA.

I was a bartender and server in Monterey CA on the beach last year. Did it for over a year. You don't see guys in suits with fixed blades on their sides dining out with their wife or gf. Not to say you can't do it. Its legal in CA. But there is no magical knife that is going to help you avoid those looks as it appears is what you are trying to do.

If you want to have something fancy and gentlemanly, look into the Shun Higo Nokami Personal Steak Knife, or maybe the Shima. Very elegant and purpose built. You don't be able to baton with it, or cut the rook off a car, but it will show that steak, chicken, or fish who is boss.

I just spent some time looking at the Gunny knives.

Me likey!

The dark and stripey wooden handled Gunny's have the type of elegance I'm looking for - artistic beauty in a functional package.

I do like the Woodswalker for a small food knife. However I do have to ask, why?
Mainly because I use my Opinel Carbone #9 at the moment and would really prefer not to have to deal with the extra trouble of gooping-up or germing-out the inaccessible bits.

Other than that, I find that using a fine blade greatly enhances my enjoyment of a meal.

Also, I play music on cruise ships a couple of times a year to and from Hawaii/Tahiti that last from 10-28 days. So I want a knife for the formal dining nights and specialty steak restaurants on board.

(edit: added the word 'a' for grammar.)

While I'm not looking for a folder at the moment, those are some handsome knives you suggested.

A few suggestions:

-Mcusta MC-6 'Slim Line' series fixed blades (3.5" layered Damascus/VG-10 core blades, various handle material)
-Moki Bird & Trout (3.5" AUS-8 blades, various handle material)
-Moki Banff (2.25"-3.5" VG-10 blades, linen micarta scales)

Good luck, OP! :)

As a cook, I wouldn't want to cut with my nice knives on glass (plates), but an opinel or Jean Dubost Laguiole fits in most Northern California restaurants without causing alarm.

Woodswalker is a nice choice.

Stab, I dig that combo. Hadn't seen that before.

Woodswalker is nicer to your wallet, however.

If you haven't already, be sure to check the cruise line policy regarding the possessing/carrying of knives on board. You wouldn't want to lose a paying gig by walking around with a knife on your belt or pulling it out in the dinning hall (or, you might say screw them and their job if they won't let you have a knife on board ;)).

There was a thread awhile back about bringing/carrying knives on cruise ships. If I recall correctly the cruise lines tend to frown upon it. That's why I mention it. And some people said- "If I can't have a knife then screw them. I'll take my money and vacation somewhere else" ;).

I haven't had any problems onboard with the knives I've brought and used so far. Taking knives onboard and off-board has never been an issue with the ship's security either.

I see a lot of sheathed multi-tools being carried freely and openly by the crew. On my last cruise one of the safety officers was openly carrying a Mora.

I take fixed blades with me to use on steak nights...My Swamp Rat Rodent Solution is my favorite for this.
