I am trying to get some ideas for sheathing my dagger. I have a budget of about $100 give or take for something just right.

I would like something custom made from one of our sheath makers.

If it was your dagger and budget, what type of sheath would you go with?

Pictures of examples are welcomed!!!

The knife is 9.5 inches overall with roughly a 5" blade.

Black kydex all the way. :D

Seriously though. Maybe something close to the Fairbairn Sykes sheath only with the clasp against the quard and not on the butt of the knife. Then you can have fancy scroll work or a continuation of your lettering.

Thanks for the reply!

Black Kydex, why didn't I think of that!!! :D

A clasp over the guard is a great style. I could definitely see myself going for something like that. (I'm still open to other ideas though)

I really want the sheath to set the knife off, so other than practical styling, what do you all think about aesthetics? (what type of scrolling or leather work if any, black or tan leather, stitching VS rivets, other inlaid materials, etc).

Lets say we double the budget for aesthetics alone. Then what could we do? I am new to custom sheaths and have seen very few of them.

This isn't a knife I will probably ever carry, so as far as practicality, it is kind of secondary.

Im may end up with something less flashy, but I just want to understand what can be done.

Thanks again.

In my opinion, Kydex is too tactical/utilitarian for such a stylish knife.

I'd say, black leather, tooling to match the design on the pommel or perhaps some type of celtic or scandinavian design, engraved brass accents across the top and over the tip, stiching rather than rivets so as not to distract from the brass accents and so the sheath doesn't look to "busy".

With the economy the way it is, maybe it wouldn't be so hard to find someone to make the sheath at a reasonable price.

By the way, nice looking knife. Has kind of a Viking look to it.

Killgar, great idea!

So far, I am liking the black leather with brass incorporated into it and a clasp over the guard. Im not sure of all the different ways that brass could be applied to the sheath though...

All I have really seen is the "band" around the top of a scabbard as well as the "tip protector." Maybe they could be shaped to mirror the lines of the engraving?

Ideas are welcome!

Also, how realistic is my budget? Will the brass add-ons double the cost?

Thanks

PS- I added a couple more pictures to my original post.

For much less than 100, Mike Sastre can make you a drawpoint or southern comfort sheath

Very nice dagger! I agree with a lot of the suggestions here, continuing the scroll work onto the leather would look nice and the acanthus pattern is a classic.

Or maybe a tooling and inlay combo like this one.

This vine carving might look nice with that one as well.

Also, most of the more artistically inclined leather workers here can work up a custom carving pattern to suit your tastes. :)

Good luck on your search, its half the fun! :D

Here is one for a similar shaped dagger. Black veg. tan cowhide with two overlays and centered horn back alligator inlay, using black and brown for contrast. It would approximate just about double your original budget quote.

I like the contrast between the black and brown on that one! Very classy. :)
