Hi guys, this is a review of a sheath done for me by Mike Stott AKA redneckidokie.
I must admit that I was a little hesitant about sending off one of my custom knives to a relative unknown. I mean, Ive never had a face to face with him and hes relatively new to the boards. Im so glad that I took the chance. Everything went quickly and Im happy to say Ive made a new friend.
We emailed back and forth on what I wanted...I even sent pics of the knife and a similar style sheath. A nice guy...he listened to what I wanted and said no problem. I oiled up my baby, wrapped it up ...wrapped it some more and sent it off. He got it with no problem. He gave me some good-natured ribbing about my packaging but he sent it back to me the same way. The knife came back to me in the same condition as sent.
The knife I sent was a Bowie knife by Robert Hankins AKA blinker. It has an S guard so it posed its own set of problems.
As far as specs on the sheath, it is 9 oz. veggie tan, cow hide, laced with waxed synthetic sinew, and dyed with Fiebing's USMC black. Just your basic style except for the added width at the throat for the wide guard.
I wanted an over the guard retaining strap with a snap. I also wanted little to no embellishment. The top of the belt loop was to be 1 ¼ inches from the end of the pommel. He nailed it perfectly. The throat of the sheath was carved so that the guard fit all the way down into the sheath with NO gap. The knife is in there nice and tight, it doesnt shift or rattle at all. The strap comes down over the guard just right; the snap is centered in the middle of the sheath. The stitching is close and tight and uniform.
The knife and sheath ride very well. Its not heavy and clunky. After a few minutes I forgot that it was there, which is what a good sheath should do. You dont notice it till you need it. Sitting down and kneeling were no problem.
Overall Im very impressed and very happy. Id recommend Mike to anyone that needs leather work. Hes even started doing holsters too.
Look for pics to follow, put up by Heber aka wildmanh.
