I have been using an RC-4 for the better part of a year and I have really come to appreciate it as a tool. I like that it is pretty basic - simple steel, simple handle, and a fairly simple design. But most of all, I have some to appreciate the sheath.

Lots of knives come with kydex sheaths these days (or something similar like an injection molded sheath) but very few come so function right out of the box. I was specifically shopping for knives that would be MOLLE ready from the start which pretty much narrowed my search down to Rat Cutlery, Rat Cutlery, and Rat Cutlery. I need something that could mount securely to a drop leg holster platform (Eagle Industries MOLLE shroud for the Safariland 6004). It is mounted on a belt that sees heavy use in carbine classes as well as hiking when I want to get my pistol below my pack.

Besides the obvious utility of having a knife at the ready, it is especially useful to have a fixed blade knife around the AR-15. There is a certain type of malfunction that is peculiar to the AR-15 and somewhat rare. It happens when a piece of spent brass somehow works its way up over the top of the bolt, in between the bolt and charging handle. This type of malfunction can't be fixed with a simple immediate action, in fact pulling back on the charging handle makes it worse! The usual way to fix it in the field is to carefully use the tip of the knife to pull the bolt back independent of the charging handle, allowing the brass to come free. Now obviously this isn't a normal use for a knife but it is a handy way to get your carbine back up and running. Without a knife (or similarly shaped tool) your day could be ruined.

It is really refreshing to see a company that provides sheaths that are not just an afterthought! You can tell from the simple designs and the actual functional sheaths that Rat Cutlery makes tools to be used.

So how do you mount/carry your RATs? I would love to see some pics of your RATs mounted on packs, chest rigs, belts, what ever!

Great post and great Pic. If management ever allows us to wear thigh holsters, then I would definatly wear my RC-3 there. But for now, I have it TEK-LOCed to by duty belt.

Thigh holsters are great when you need one - like when you want to keep the holster away from body armor or a pack. It also happens to be a pretty handy place to keep a RAT.
