Sheaths with Studs?

I have been spending alot more time over in the Custom and Handmade Knives subforum lately, that and the Makers area.

The bowies that typically have sheaths I see on bladeforums have Studs on the sheaths. I have no idea how this type of sheath is carried and I would like to know. Is there supposed to be some kind of "frog"' made for it, or it is just pinned inside a leather belt in a hole? I am very confused about this type of sheath and its carry method.

Traditionally, they were used with a frog as you mentioned. Now most just tuck it between the belt and pants or IWB, and use the stud as a stop so the rig doesn't slide down.
