Something just occured to me... and I wanted to get ya'll's input. Has anyone noticed any sheeple freakin out over an old school slippie? ya know like a canoe, congress, stockman, sak, etc, etc... for everyday cutting jobs at the office? or wherever sheeple congregate. The reason I ask is that in my experiance it seems to me when one produces a "tactical" or a frame/liner lock. is when folks start freakin. but when an old school "accepted"? traditional pocket knife, is brought to use, they're cool with it.

any thoughts, comments, retorts, differences of opinion, snyde remarks :D on the subject?

After offering a former boss my SAK to open a package, he said "Oh, you carry a pocket knife...that's nice....my grandfather had one." (or something substantially similar). Had I pulled out a tactical folder, I'm sure he wouldn't have been happy to see it. He didn't even notice the Opinel that I used in front of him, repeatadly- this in a more formal, professional, work enviroment.

At an Ag fair, I used my Vic Spartan to help a mother cut the zip ties on a toy she bought her kid. Again, she was pleasantly pleased to see a pocket knife- my partially serrated tactical probably wouldn't have gotten that result.

Now some people surprise you. This girl at work asked me if she could use my knife (I was surprised she knew I had one- in hindsight she probably picked up on the clip), and I handed her my Gerber AR 3.00- everything going against it being black, partially serrated and tactical. I didn't want her to accidentally close a slippie on herself. Not only did it turn out that she really likes the Gerber, but in her purse she has an SAK (that she uses frequently) with more layers than any of mine.

that is the same I see here in central Indiana, I just traded my duaghter my Gerber para-frame, that folks really freaked over at work when I used it to cut open a box (Verizon Corporate Building, Heavily Infested with Sheeple...BTW) for her Camillus carbon bladed canoe (3.75"OAL) used it today to open a box of supplies for my boss and she was like "oh what a nice pocket knife!", she totally freaked though about the gerber! (almost got disciplined for it!) Guess image really is everything. gonna find me a good carbon bladed medium stockman or mini hunter to use as an EDC, American or German either would be fine with me.

Interesting to hear others discuss this. It's one of the things that I like about the Boker SubCom - Los Banos' little knife is so small it doesn't seem to freak anyone out.

I'm a lawyer and I work with a bunch of liberal nanny-stater types (though they're pretty cool with me). If I have to open something, I try to turn my back to the crowd so that no one freaks out. I have considered carrying an old Boker carbon-bladed barlow knife I have, just to have a non-threatening knife with me - the thing is that I carry so much stuff already that I don't want to load up with one more. I've resigned myself to just carrying a clip-on knife (usually a Boker Trance nowadays - sheesh, what is it with me and Boker in this post? ;)) and hearing "Whoa!" every time it gets seen (even though I hardly think of it as an especially "tactical" knife).

She had a knife and was asking to use yours? I can get this story third hand, in writing, and still recognize she was hitting on you. That didn't occur to you? Get back to work... now!

As far as your question, yeah, it's all about context. Discreetly using a large sebenza for a legitimate purpose is far different from making a production over the A/O action of a little Kershaw Chive. Every office/workplace is different, but I've found if you're intentions are good, no one who knows you will make a federal case over pulling out a knife, anywhere.

My thoughts on the subject are:

- know the state and local laws, and comply with them;

- know and comply with any workplace policies; and be cognizant of the fact that even a small blade can make Nervous Nancy run to the boss and cause trouble.

If one is in compliance with the law (and/or workplace policy), then everyone else can kiss one's hiney. I take pleasure in carrying a big nasty blade and exercising my God-given (and legal) right to cut things with it. But, I work at home and have no boss to deal with, so its easy for me to say. :) JMO.

I don't think in California that most folks even realize a concealed 4" folder is legal. Fortunately, a knife clipped on your pocket and with shirt out, will be missed by most everybody. I do notice LEO's staring at mine though.

I'm right there with you reconranger, but I do have to say that although I too live in the People's Republic of California, most people are quicker to "claim" that me carrying my Spyderco Police or other larger bladed knife is illegal (which it is damn well not) than to exclaim, "OMG, he has a knife!!".

Most people out here are pretty laid back in general, but someone else mentioned the workplace. KNOW your workplace policies on carrying "weapons" because as we all know, it is a tool first and a weapon second, but some people are ignorant of that. It would be really lame to lose your job because some hippie freaks out.

At my workplace (a private university), all they previously had in the employee handbook was a quotation of the state gun law (which allows you to have a handgun unloaded and properly stored in your vehicle). No mention of knives.

Now, they ban "all weapons of any kind" on university property, even when legally stored in your vehicle and even if you have a CCW. No objective definition of what a "weapon" is.....

The less the sheeple see, the better. If you think otherwise, take a clue from the United States Secret Service. These heavily-armed agents keep their hardware completely concealed and look professional all of the time. Do the same and you shouldn't have any problems. Keep your knife well-concealed!

Just happy to come from and still live in a small town where if you don't have a knife (or several on your person) your looked at strangely!!!

When my pocket knife(fixed blade in a sheath clipped in my pocket) is noticed I get the "OMG you have a weapon" comment once in a while. My responses normally include "yes I have a tool in my pocket", " no it is not a weapon", "what kind of violent person are you to consider that to be a weapon". If it is a friend of mine that notices, I normally hand it to them to show off, and after inspecting it most of them try to figure out how to fold it before they hand it back to me. The interesting thing is that I am constantly looking at pockets to see what is clipped to them, yet it seems that sheeple vary rarely notice my knife. The only reason that I make this observation is that occasionally someone who I have dealt with almost daily for months will become surprised when they notice my knife.

I do like to keep an Atwood Booger on my keyring just in case I need to slice something while totally overrun by sheeple.
