So I go to the gas station to fill my wife's car and I'm still wearing my "yard" pants and a long flannel shirt, covering the leatherman and Strider SA-L that are permantently attached to the belt. I'm not going anywhere else so it's not a problem. Well the guy on the pump opposite me has a problem getting the receipt out of the pump and asks me if I have a nail file or a screwdriver. A nail file? So I go over and see that I can reach the lower end of the receipt with the Strider. Without thinking I draw the SA-L which is a rather small fixed blade but nevertheless a FIXED BLADE and proceed to fish the receipt out of the machine for the fellow. His reaction to the knife - NONE! He says thanks and is on his way as am I. What does this mean? He didn't see the knife? He did and didn't care? He was probably in his 40's. For me it was like being back in school in the 40's and 50's when we all carried knives (even in school) and it was not a problem.

Maybe he hopped into his car quickly before the smell of soiled drawers reached your nostrils? or Maybe he was a well adjusted individual who just doesnt carry knives? :D

LOL@ alcoloneofcorn!

Rare are the people who cringe at the sight of something edged yet useful.
When I am at work and somebody spots me using my BM710 cutting say, shrink wrapping or plastic banding material, I always elicit the comment of 'Hey buddy, isn't that illegal? Put that away before somebody sees you!!'. I just tell them that it's alright, I studied the laws regarding this one and it seems alright to carry. I use my 710 in a 'normal' manner, meaning not being tempted to 'Axis-flick' it or else I'll risk the thought of my co-worker's disbelief.

or maybe he only had his custom folder with blued patterned damascus blade on him, and he didn't want to get it dirty. :D

..a "nailfile" to retrieve said receipt and for the fear of not scaring the sheeple ,not take out his "Sebenza/Lochsa/semi-customBM et.al"(and possibly scratch the blade!)-hence no reaction.

Ive been asked im my spyderco is illegal many times and had it refered to as a switch-blade... ah well.

I had a good experience with a member of the general public and my knife this weekend. I was at the local gardening nursery Sunday picking up some rose plants for the Mother-in-law and some annuals for the Wife. The cashier needed to cut the plastic tags off of the roses so she could ring them up. She pulls out some cheapo knife to remove the tags and of course I pull out my blue Spyderco Salsa to help. What was the reaction? Hey that is a nicer knife than mine! Where did you get it? I told her about Spyderco's Factory Outlet and she seemed interested.

The point is that she didn't scream for help or freaked out! I suspect that she was probably use to seeing knives since I imagine most of the guys and gals working there used knives of some sort around the plants.

Regardless, it was nice not hearing any negative remarks.

I was just using my BM 635 to open a box as a lady was walking by, and she commented on what a pretty knife it was. :D

That's a great idea for the separate Sheeple forum! I've had more reception to the idea of knives, when I use my multitools instead of my knives.

My guess is he was more observant than you think and he asked you for a reason.

He probably saw, at some point, that you had a little something clipped to your pants and thought, "I wonder what that is". Maybe he was a fellow knife knut and just wanted to see yours. :)

I doubt it.........but it's a nice thought.:D
