Wondering about something in regards to sheet stock. Now it is clear how to profile a blank on barstock, but what about sheet stock.
Well, the grain runs in one direction, what happens if a knife is ground out against the grain direction?
Adverse affect on strength, responce to HT, e.g. wrappage?

I am thinking that it should have no effect, as grain structure is due to rolling by the mills. And eventually grain structure will be changed anyway in the final product due to HT.

Your thought on this?

Thanks a bunch.

I don't know about store bought sheet steel but when I was working exclusively with old saw blades, I cut my blades in any direction I needed to for maximum yeild per saw. Never had any problems.

I'm going to get blasted but what the he((.
I asked my brotherinlaw about grain structure and what direction things should be cut out of on plate steel. He has been a construction fabrication welder in gas and oil plants for 20 years.
His reply was, what grain structure its a slab of steel not a peice of wood. They cut parts, braces, brackets and cut them out of the steel in whatever way yeilds the most parts per sheet.

yes it does make a difference what way you cut the blade from the steel it needs to be cut with the grain running up and down in the blade not lenthwise i have steel sheet made and they will tell you in what dierection they rolled it the grain in the steel is then standing up on edge the knife will cut longer this way

Gerome is right according to Bill Moran. Ed Fowler says the grain will even show on a ball bearing if it is acid etched.
