It has a strong snap,no play,its crude,but sharp & sturdy
What do you make of it ? Old ? S-K,Mick ?? Anyone,?

I was told,1960's 70's ?? And not alot around.Either way,a very nice gift :)

Would it be marked Sheffield and not England if it were 1960s? Or did you mean 1860s?
Neat knife.

That's quite a knife Vince.

I think ? it's known as a "stick whittler", very heavy construction having a 2 1/2" and 2" blade, iron liners and pins. I believe they were made during the 1950s-60s.

The firm of James Barber was acquired by Thos Ellin & Co, who in turn were taken over by Jos Elliott's.

No doubt Mick,it is pretty heavy duty Thank You for that info.

Looks like the blades are pretty old stock -- they've got hand forged nail nicks (note the crescent shape the whole nick has). But yes, the brass or perhaps low nickel content nickel silver bolsters with iron pivot pins put it at least in the 1950s-60s.

Dwight,
When I first checked it out today,I noticed the blades. It had a look of a knife built later,of earlier components / methods/styling.
Neat knife.

Vince, i've got a similar "Era/James Barber" knife with plastic(?) handles. super heavy duty & put together very well. I'll post pics hopefully in next 24 hrs. not home right now.

Feels great in hand. very solid.
The blades are different from Vince's example, with a Sheepsfoot master and an "interesting leaf shaped Pen-like blade" with swages on both sides, secondary.
is this still a "Stick Whittler" ?

Roland,Thank You for posting that one
Can you tell if the nail nicks on your blades are like on the stag one ?
Thanks Again,
