A little envelope turned up yesterday afternoon, containing a thoughtful gift from our good buddy Jack.
I guess he'd seen me post somewhere that I usually whittle sticks to use as pipe tools, and must have thought me a bit uncouth... "That fella could use a bit more class!" ;) Well, this is certainly a classy bit of kit. A little Richards (Sheffield) pipe tool, with shell covers made of what I assume is some sort of silver alloy (?). A tamping "foot," a blunt-nosed blade for scraping the bowl, and a poker. Works great, I've already tried it out! The rounded tip of the blade protects the bottom of the pipe bowl when scraping the cake down to a uniform thickness on the walls (of which service this pipe has been in dire need for some time...!).

Thanks, Jack! I'll use this little guy, and think of you when I do! :)

LOL! Glad it arrived Alex, classy pic ;) I'd actually forgotten I'd sent it, but then I have the memory of... a middle-aged man! :D

That's just like the one I used to use to clean my dad's pipes out for him when I was a kid :)

The poker might make a serviceable stiletto in an emergency! ;) :D

Hope you have many years of happy pipe-smoking together

Jack

I've seen those around & thought about getting one for the collection, but I don't smoke a pipe so I couldn't really justify the purchase.(though I'm sure the pick is useful for other than the intended purpose)

Nice gesture Jack.

Congrats Alex---I too have had the great fortune of Jacks generosity!!!

Very nice Jack!!!

Paul

Funny, I'm reading this and smoking my pipe. Awesome!! Very nice pipe tool indeed!

Thanks fellers :) I told Alex I'd look out for a pipe-tool for him several months ago, at a time when I was coming across them regularly. Then, as luck would have it, they all seemed to disappear! Sorry it took so long Alex. I'm going to snap up all the ones I see in future :D

Nice one Jack.

These are always plentiful at flea markets (in varrying condition) when you don't need 'em....and as I don't smoke a pipe I always leave em be. Maybe I'll have to give em a second chance and snap up the good ones too.

Just the perfect tool to maintain your pipe. Thanks for sharing it with us. Wonderful work, Jack!

Thanks fellers :)

Nice. That Jack is a good egg.

LOL! :D

I haven't seen many lately at all, compared to in the past, perhaps pipe-smoking is having a renaissance! Maybe we should buy all the decent ones we come across up, and we can have a mega pipe tool giveaway! :D

Well Jack, they certainly have no appeal to me, but I'm genuinely happy to grab the decent ones to share. You have been more than generous, I'd like to do my part too.

Hey, it's a mission! We can plot it out over some beers! :D

Hey there Alex-how cool to read this, and to hear that Jacks Dad had his very own pipe cleaned by the same knife!
I love this shot, and I loved reading this neat thread, well done to you Jack - you picked a great guy to gift the pipe knife to!

EDIT: Ijust re-read Jacks post - it wasn't the same knife but one just like it - sorry :-(

It seems like we have a fair number of pipe smokers here - one of my favorite ways to relax since 1981 (with a traditional pocket knife needless to say!). :)
