Was pretty happy with the quality of my rough rider copperhead really looks the part and feels well made. but took it out my pocket and the sheild shot out. luckily it dropped on our dark carpet so was easy to spot. It arrived from the shop not straight in stag scales and after cleaning the residual glue out I found this is because part of the scales hadn't had enough material taken away so most likely the glue couldn't contact the brass sheild and all that was holding it in was friction. Using the awl on my vic tinker I took away the material myself gently scraping it off until the shield fitted perfectly (ie it was held by friction but straight) then poppedal it back out again added a couple drops locatite super glue and pushed it back in flush, appears job done.

As I said seem like lovely knives for the money but may need a bit of user refinement ?

Cheers

Chris

I'd be willing to bet no more than 10 bucks.

About what I figured. For a sawbuck, a knife "may need a bit of user refinement." It will work fine and people like them...but stuff may fall off. Not exactly a Schatt&Morgan.

Hey, man. I know how you feel. I've owned a number of relatively inexpensive knives over the years that I've happily used, loved and had to make a few "adjustments" to along the way. They still hold a lot of sentimental value because they were some of the first knives I ever purchased at a price point that made sense for me at that time. My tastes have refined over the years and I know a lot more about quality steel and knives but I still love a few of my initial purchases the most. Big knife world out there so enjoy and welcome to the forums. Thanks for the post.

I've had a couple wr case knives do the very same thing. That's one of the things I like about gec, their badges are pinned. Then you have the buck slipjoints where Its part of the liner, I like those too. Rough riders are great for what you pay, especially if you want to test out some new patterns. A little glue or epoxy like you did and I've never had it happen a second time though:thumbup:

Not quite £13.95 delivered so was still a very good deal but yeah not as good fit and finish as the higher end gear my edc knife is my victorinox tinker which cost £20 and it's perfect so quality can be done for little money

They are nice for the money but I'm tempted by a case next or a gec they seem to be rarer in uk though allot of case knives for sale though

This will happen with most of the modern brands regardless of cost and country of origin. It's the cost of gluing them in vs. pinning them in. I've seen it happen with Case, Eye Brand, etc.....

I've only had one glued shield pop out of a knife; it was an otherwise spectacular specimen from Queen. I just super-glued it back in and haven't had a problem since.

Personally, I'd rather a manufacturer pin their shields (and charge me more for the added expense) or not put 'em on at all. But it's not a big deal really, and hasn't stopped me from buying more knives with glued shields.
