Generally the guard is hooked on both sides, so you can use it to extract shotgun shells from a shotgun after they're fired. An antique shop here had an old Italian-made extractor knife, that had guards that were sized for .410 cartridge shells, IIRC.

I own a few of them. Both auto and manual opening. They are still made for shotguns that do not have extractors. Some have two gauge sizes. Others have only one size. They are still manufactured by Massaro and a few other makers.
