Shelters, Shacks, and Shanties

I was looking in a bookstore the other day, and came across a book called "Shelters, Shacks, and Shanties And How To Make Them", by D.C. Beard, the founder of the Boy Scouts of America.

It goes from simple "debris" type shelters to log cabins. Good, if dated illustrations of how to make shelters of varying degrees of complication from natural material, although it does say that the birch bark coverings on some of the projects could by done with tar paper.

Here are a few examples of more modern day improvised shelters. I took these photos while in Haiti a few weeks after the quake. One photo was of a UN organized camp with good sanitation and decent shelters.

The other two were completely ramshackle, up in the hills away from Port Au Prince by a destroyed convent and school. There was a pretty big difference between the 2 camps both in terms of the conditions and the health of the people living there.
