Ok now that I got one how do you I wear it? Is there a trick or do you just wrap it around my head?

Thanks

I'll give it a try though. These directions are all done from your position while wearing it.

First fold it into a triangle. That's all that's needed if you use the agal (donut thingy) If you want it wrapped around your face start with the triangle then:

Take the long points in each hand and hold it so the short point is behind your head, off centered. You'll want the short end just about over one of your shoulders (doesn't matter which one, can be folded either way but let's say the left).

Now, with it off centered continue to hold the point in your right hand and let the rest fall over the top of your head (the long straight edge should be in front at about mid-forehead level and the short point sitting on your left shoulder). Take your left hand and pinch the shemagh right over your left shoulder, even with your ear, and lift (this will cause a fold where the front edge of the shemagh will end up next to your face when you get farther in the process).

Now take the pinch and slide your fingers away from your head down towards the left endpoint. You should now be holding the shortened right tail end in your right hand, the rear point is over your left shoulder and your left hand is holding the long end. At his point you can let go of the left end if you need to, just let it hang in front of your left shoulder. Just don't let go of the right point yet.

Now, take the left end about midway between the offcentered rear point and the actual end of the left point and start to wrap it in a clockwise motion around your face. Pull it tight as needed, to get the right amount of length for the tie off, and work your hand along the tail towards the point as you wrap. Work in a spiraling motion with the tail point ending up going over your ears and across your forehead. You should end up with the tail end of the wrap over your right ear at this point.

Now, take the end in your right hand and pull it towards the top of your head (roughly that direction) and towards the wrapped tail end and tie them in a square knot. The knot should be at about temple level on the right side of your head.

The more you practice the better you will be at judging just how off centered it needs to be and how tight and where the finishing knot ends up to keep it all from falling apart.

Have fun!

I thought Id add my two pence worth here! I have a collection of shemaghs and I am begining to see them being used more and more by British and American troops. The American Commander of the 5th Special Forces Group was in Afghanistan wearing a sand and black variation. I am told that each color of shemagh represents some sort of arab ethnic group but I dont have specifics on that. The shemagh is a very useful bit of kit and I never travel down range with out one.I look foward to any further threads about shemaghs Cheers!

Did anyone see 60 minutes last night? The Special operations Team that was featured were wearing Shemaghs. This supports my last post on shemaghs being in fashion. Im looking for a sand and black one for my collection currently.Wear one in these parts of the country and people become hostile...Im much too wise for that!

Hey All,
Does anyone make shemaghs from a nylon, e.g. cool max, type material other than cotton. Or, is cotton prefered?
Thanks,
Wesley

Wesley: All I have seen are cotton versions. Any other material may be more practical but not traditional. I would like to see more versions other than cotton though...cheers!

none of the above links seem to work for me.. I searched and got this:

https://www.sebertool.co.uk/cgi-bin...rch&PN=AdventureKIT_Shemaghs_5.html#a241#a241

which I hope will take you to the picture of this shemagh, but I still do not understand very well what it is... I have tried to follow the directions posted and make a terrible mess of things..it is ok to laff at me...

Is this a square piece of material? I am usung a 36" x 36" square os cloth just to try the idea out. Or is there some tailoring, that I can't see in the site photo? The one thing I know is I am doing this wrong! Mac aka W. McKay

I came back in on edit: There is a security certificate included with the link. I am have some difficulty getting the site to show. I don't know what is wrong, or how to get you to see the site and photo..

Thanks PipeyCain. It probably would be easy just to make one out of a better and lighter material. For some reason, I am very anti-cotton when outdoors (which usually means I am in or near the water, whether it be rain or whatever). Let me know if you have any good thoughts!

Mac, the shemaghs I have seen are usually a bit off-square with only 1/2 to 1 inch separating the edge measurements. As far as folding and wearing one, I cannot help you as I have not yet tried to wear one.

Take care,
Wesley

I pretty much agree about cotton not being all that great as outdoor wear, with the exception of neckerchiefs. Sure if it is raining you might want to remove any cottons, but I find in below 0'F that the cotton neckerchief used as a face mask bandit sytle freezes solid, and make for a pretty good shield against the wind and cold which is moldable.

I am not saying to use a neckerchief as this shemagh would be worn however. I have a few 36" x 36" silk rags and find these are not as good for the above purpose. I would not know about sythetic materials that would work, but keep in mind fire as synthetics tend to melt and stick when burning...

Mac, great addition. I did not even think of the flame retardant properties of some materials vs. others. I will definitely keep that in mind. I agree about the freezing part of cotton; I also have a fleece balaclava that does the same thing when I run in subzero weather.

Guys: As far as wearing Shemaghs, I have seen everything.I have even seen one british soldier stretch his shemagh over the roll bar of the Land Rover he was assigned to in order to erect some sort of sun shade!
You may find more prctical items but the Shemagh is still a unique piece of kit. Im still trying to piece together just what each color and pattern means to Arabs. Cheers!

Ok I swiped what Javahead Dan swiped to use to ask questions. About the best I can do with a 36" x 36" cotton is make a bag over my head so my wife can pretend to....
