I was at a gun show and heard a fella going on and on about emersons to a knife dealer. I listened for a minute as did a few others standing around. This emerson enthusiast finally started talking about how "Ernest is the shepherd and we are the sheep"... Immediately people started looking at each other and taking a few steps back. Of course these people were gun and knife lovers but that was a bit ahhhh weird. Is that just a friendly saying that you guys kind of use amongst yourselves on the sub-forum? If so, then now I get it. I understand that many brands have followers like becker has beckerheads...
He was also constantly flipping a karambit and foaming at the mouth a bit.

Considering that many in then gun/knife world consider "sheep" to be a descriptor of people who refuse to defend themselves or question what they are told by the powers that be...........it might have been a bad reference.........and not intended in the manner received.

That is a sort of skewed version of the whole analogy for sure... If I had to use a similar one I would say shepherd and sheepdogs... but I would say Ernest is a talented knifemaker, good human and knowledgeable CQC/H2H trainer and practitioner and I'm a knife user that appreciates purpose-built tools. That just doesn't have the cool analogy ring to it. :)

The shepherd/sheep/sheepdog thing is not for me. I would hope that guy was trying to emphasize something else and didn't have a few wires crossed upstairs.

He was a younger fella. When I was younger I used to be a fanatic about my likes and that's all I ate, slept...OK, truth is, I'm still that way:) I eat/sleep knives, guns etc. but I know how to hide the crazed look in my eye about certain brands and such. Now days, sharing your excitement over guns/knives can be a little alarming if not kept in check. If I educate someone on one of my favorites I try and let the item draw them in and not my knowledge of it. I try and give answers after questions.
I think the fella I saw was just in love with his Emerson knives and had to tell someone. I've seen people give me that awkward look after I've gone that one step too far.

Yeah, sounds like the guy probably took his love of all things Emerson a bit far. The way you described it, it made him sound like a religious cult member :)

All good though. I get crazy looks from people when they find out I collect knives.
