I am going to purchase a milling machine, can anybody tell me if Sherlines benchtop models are worth the investment. If not,who sells good milling machines.

Depends on what you are going to use it for. It's NOT a bridgeport. If you keep your depth of cut low, they work fine. That low DOC os one of the best arguments for CNC on a Sherline I've ever seen. It takes the tedium out of the Sherline

I have one, and don't use it much since I got my millrite

I have owned and used a Sherline mill for several years & have been very happy with it. I only use it for slotting guards, and it's fine for this as long as you remember the limitations of the machine and take light cuts. When I bought the Sherline I was debating between it and a Chinese mill. I decided on the Sherline because floor space was tight, and the idea of storing it on a shelf (weighs 28 pounds) was important to me. I'm pleased with it, but if I had the floor space I would have bought a "real" mill.

Take a look at the Taig mills at www.taigtools.com I have just got one and really like it, it's a little larger than the Sherline and a lot heaver duty, but it's still a small mill with limitations. To see what exactly can be done with it check out Nick Carters page http://www.casco.net/~felice/taig.html
He also sells the mills and has the best prices period.....If you talk to Nick tell him Richie sent you........Hope this helps, Richie

I have a TAIG mill that I've been using the past six months. It's a well built rugged little machine. It doesn't have the power of bigger mills but that is to be expected. I like the scale of the machine in relation to the work I use it for. It brings me in close to the work. I recommend that you look around at your options keeping in mind what you want to use a mill for, how much money you have to spend, and how much shop space you can devote.
