I just stumbled across this great story about the knives Sherlock Holmes carried! Pour yourself a brandy, fire up your pipe (I'm looking at you, J jackknife !), and give it a read.

Then, chime in with what current SAK you think the grand detective would carry today!

Good Topic, I love Sherlock Holmes. I think Sherlock would carry a Climber. Holmes was a Chemist and he would use the toothpick and tweezers for his experiments. In addition given his inventiveness I am sure he would find uses for the Corkscrew. Also the scissors would probably get used frequently cutting crime stories out of the paper. Knives and openers would get used for prying, scraping, and food prep given his Bohemian lifestyle.

Ahh my friend, you've done well!

I sat down and had a small glass of bourbon on the side table, loaded up one of my Peterson Pipes of Ireland with some good English blend and got it going good. Only then did I read the post.

VERY GOOD read!!!!! And so logical. But as many times as I had read the stories, the difference between "one of these multiplex knives" and "one of those multiplex knives" had totally slipped by me! Of course it would have been a choice for Holmes.

But I don't think he would have chose a SAK. At that time, the great houses of Sheffield were at full strength, and I could see one of those many bladed multiplex knives with an IXL or other good English stamp on the blade. Perhaps some nice African ivory scales. The time frame would have been a wee bit early for the Swiss, but any good shop that carried a selection of Sheffield goods would have done good for him.

Great post! Worthy of some high order of something reward.

Lol poor Watson
Always the bridesmaid never the bride

Sure he lacked Holme's genius
But also his cocaine addition and social anxiety
And without Watsons down to earth common sense Holmes would likely have died a .. presumably strange death if not just of an overdose

I think it’s obvious that Holmes would choose a SAK with a magnifying glass -the tool most associated with detectives. Alternately, he could use the pair of small pliers to hold evidence for examination with the full-size magnifying glass that he (in some stories, at least) carries.

The hook would no doubt see more use in its original “parcel carrier” role, since “brown paper packages tied up with string” (to quote Julie Andrews) were ubiquitous in the days before packing tape.

I think Holmes would carry a SwissChamp.

I was gonna say the same thing. What he carries would definitely need a magnifying glass plus a pair of pliers.
