I wanted to start a project shillelagh. I found a nice piece of American Hornbeam and am currently debarking it. Anyone got any suggestions or things I should be aware of?

Thanks Everyone.

This is going to sound kind of weird, but I was thinking about material to cover the ball end in. I was thinking it would be kind of cool to have it covered in the rhino lining material. That stuff is pretty hard and durable. I wonder if I could get a local place to do that or if it is something I could find myself.

At this point I am really just practicing some skills. I am nowhere near competent with this enough to make it look very authentic. I was also just wondering about maybe using some modern materials to personalize it too. I really just had the hornbeam lying around because another tree fell on it.

Then if your going for experimentation I say stain it green with the rihno lining in white on the handle

I just saw a can of do-it-yourself truck bed liner stuff a a Pep Boys not long ago. Not sure how it compares to the professional spray-on liner, but it might be worth a try.
I have a titanium knife that the maker had sprayed the handle with "Rhino Liner", and it came out nice; grippy, but smooth.
