Hi Guys

I don't want to spark controversial thread, but I has always appreciated beauty of knifes with shiny highly polished blades (according to me,this reveals natural beauty of each blade, short, medium, large or giant one)

My question is towards the new phenomenon of masses of ordinary civilians buying black (dark coated) blades designed for sabotage or military operations, for ordinary hiking or bushcraft tasks?

Black coating has been first and foremost designed on military and law enforcement blades and filling one simple reason - preventing reflection of light from any sources mainly during night sabotage/undercover or military operations....

Use of coating on blades fulfilling rust prevention on carbon blades is only a secondary reason for this, so my question is why are ordinary civilians into hype of black coated blades, when in fact this will never help to their activities? For me,black coating just completely damage beauty of each knife, making out of it only black, knife shaped like object, even absorbing considerable amount of dirt from cutting that is near to impossible to clean from coating in comparison of easy cleaning of polished blade?

Write your own opinions on this please!

I actually love the look of a coated blade after its been abused, it makes the "love marks" stand out more. Also, It just plays into the personalities of young guys, even myself...if it's black, it's bad***!

I do like "mirror finishes", but few companies outside the custom or really high end stuff spend the time on that, (and some higher carbide steels don't take them well due to grain structure of the steel), so as for " satin finishes", eh, they're OK, but petsonally I don't think they're any more or less appealing then a good black coated blade.

That and I prefer black blades on my super secret spec ops ninja squirrel missions, but that's besides the point.

Because they like the way they look. Which is why they buy them. Which is why manufacturers make them.

By the way, it may very well be that you have your theory backward, and that the main "historical" reason for coating is rust protection, and not light discipline.

Coated blades keep costs lower as well.

Your grammer seriously sucks, perhaps English is not your primary language though.

Where is your source for that claim? Credible Source...

Actually I'm sure English is not your primary language, so disregard my previous comment.

Coatings allow less time and finishing on the knife, ultimately saving the consumer money, coatings also protect the steel from corrosion.

Also it's a personal thing on what people find attractive, I find your post rather rude. It comes off as if anyone who buys coated blades that isn't an operator is a mall ninja. Just my opinion.

And for what it's worth, I prefer non coated blades.

Damn it Marci , planterz is gonna be on me like stink on poop. Lol

I'm not usually a stickler for spelling or grammar unless someone's post is REALLY bad. I know I don't always use correct grammar or spelling.

Hope your Turkey day was good.
Psst. "grammar." Jus' sayin' :D

Never said it was, but it is better than yours.

I already posted my preference in this thread, I guess you missed it.

I also brought up another good reason for coatings, did you miss that as well?

Good luck starting a bunch of threads that are rather pointless. And basically a cry for attention.
Dude read your first post in this thread for gods sake lol[/QUOTE

Yes,so polished vs coated blade? Your "grammer" is not so perfect, thought English is my fifth language, but I guess your first and native, am I wrong? :)

Are you having a period?

I tend to prefer a satin finish on blades. Mirror polished blades don't "age" well, scratches and patina look awful on them.

I only buy a knife with a black blade when its a design I really like and it's not available with an uncoated blade.

All practical reasons aside, some people just like the look of black blades and that's reason enough to own them.

Funny you should bring up periods considering your first post in this thread has ZERO periods lol

Edit to add, turns out you used three periods one after the other. But didn't complete a single sentence with a period, bummer.

One long run on sentence. Periods are placed at the end of a sentence.:)
Are you having a period?

Back to the topic.

I like the look of an uncoated blade better. Whenever possible I choose the uncoated vs coated. I have removed the coating from a knife, and the surface underneath looked unfinished. So I agree with whoever said it is partially a cost saving method.

Costumer like black blade, knife maker make blade black. Called MARKETING .

Regardless of claims and advertising and testimonials to the contrary most general consumers are not going to purchase military issued gear in current covert deployment. But a muscular former soldier holding a black coated military styled knife with appropriate scowl and a title appearing under the picture, moves product. Coated blades tend to lose their coating when used. Some users like this. Others do not. Rust prevention is the primary reason to treat a blade. Same reason one blues a firearm.
As far as Law Enforcement Blades, can you name one? Most duty arms in LEO are going to be either a firearm or a baton. Yes there are exceptions but very few Western World Municiple Police Department's are going to issue their LEO'S an official duty grade edged weapon. That doesn't mean the policeman won't have a knife on him but I'm curious to see the City Legal Department that okays that.
