I think it actually turned out okay!
Black to ugly to shiny (satin).

Full convex with just the edge left to do. It definitely wasn't one of the easier blades to work on with all the deep machining/grindng marks.

Cheers,
Dave

I used a grinder.

Oh, and the "marks" on the blade are reflections of wrinkles in my special light dispersion material.

That looks really good. I've got one that's still in the ugly stage. :D

I am dying to strip my regular ASH1 but I'm afraid of what I may find hiding under that coating. I don't have a grinder so I would have to do it by hand and that is something I find to be rather intimidating.

Avg_Joe, I think you'd have a very easy time doing a regular ASH1 by hand. I know the HOG editions are very smooth under the coating. I think Bravado was the first to strip his and he even managed to keep the logo etc when he did a scotch-brite finish. There was a thread about it.

PS - flatgrinder did a tutorial on how to replace the tube fasteners on handle. Worked like a charm.

Many thanks. I have done the exact same convexing of the blade on my Skinny Ash but want to remove the handles to give a uniform finish on the choil and pommel. How did you drill out the rivets? An overhead drilling rig or a milling machine? Did you experience any difficulty with the rivets? Did they hang up on the bit ? Did you oil the inside of the rivet before drilling? What type of steel was the drill bit?

Hi Peter,
I used drill a press and had no trouble. I've finally started to clamp everything I drill. The last horror story did it for me.

I tried a .25" bit but must have gotten off center or something and it left the rivet hanging on. I switched to a slightly greater than .25" diameter (no oil, cobalt bit but would have used a cheaper one if I'd had one) and just drilled until I felt INFI. The top of the fastener stayed on the bit and slid off easily. I punched out the part in the handle and that was that.

I did several blades at the same time and I think maybe one rivet spun. I adjusted its fit with a hammer and drilled the other side without incident.

Good luck,
Dave

Thanks Dave, this will be my first time doing this. ( As you can probably tell....I am a bit nervous of damaging the grips.....). Your tip on clamping is noted and will be followed!

Actually, those are just distortions in the space-time continuum due to special ingredients in the INFI recipe. You don't see them with all blades, and the coatings seem to have some sort of cloaking effect. If you're worried about performance, you can send it to me for disposal. I just dump it into one of those extra-small dimensions, the knife folds in on itself, and the distortions eventually dissipate.
