Can anyone tell me (who has actual knowledge) whether or not it would be legal for me to ship an auto knife from Texas to my son in North Carolina?

I know that autos are legal in NC. I'm not sure about Texas, but I can't imagine they would be illegal there...

I think the only problem you would legally have is that the only Federal law governing switchblades is one that says you can't use the US mail to transport them, so if you used UPS or FEDEX, you'd be OK.

Oh yeah they Are legal here. They only recently became legal here. I guess it would be reasonable to assume if it's legal in both states then it would legal to ship there?

That's a good point! I can certainly go UPS.

Well, it's a federal felony to ship any automatic knife across state lines in any part of the country from what I've read. However, it'd be very unlikely that any carrier would be able to figure out that it's a knife in the package; even less likely a switchblade. The only loophole is if the person receiving the knife is a military officer with privileges to an automatic knife. I'd imagine not all the people that have ordered autos from BladeHQ(or any knife supplier, for that matter) actually qualify, so I think it's safe to say you'll be fine.

Thanks!

If it is illegal to ship them then I guess every distributor in the country and most on line dealers are breaking the law. The last auto I received was mailed via USPS!

Well dang I guess I've been breaking the law for a while then. Oops.

Only if you were carrying them in public when in Texas. They were only illegal to carry, not to own. Part of the weirdness of Texas knife law is the wording. We have "legal to carry" and "illegal to carry off your own property" (or property under your control, e.g., hunting lease).

Now, autos are treated like any other knife, in that if it meets all the other "legal to carry" requirements, you can carry it. Before the law change, no type of auto was legal for carrying, except for the typical leo/military/rescue exceptions.

That wording trips a HUGE number of people up. I constantly see people commenting on Youtube knife reviews that "I wish I could buy the SP-10 but it's illegal in Texas" or "I can't believe the state that Jim Bowie died defending won't let you own a Bowie!". I do my best to correct them that they are NOT illegal to own, just illegal to walk around with on your hip...and they even become legal to do THAT if you're out hunting or camping or on your own property.
