I have a WWII bayonet on ebay. I also want to put a antique sword on ebay. Is it legal for me to use the US post office to ship these and other edged weapons/blades? In the US and/or overseas? The bayonet has a 10" blade no sabbard and the sword has a 28.5" blade and a sabbard. All I can find is info about switchblades and shipping. Thanks

As long as it isn't an auto you should be fine, in the US at least. Overseas could depend on which country you are sending it to.

Thanks Shootist 16,
I think I got some bad info from my local PO. He had me call him back after he checked his book. He said no weapons no matter when they were made. I believe I can mail them also. I done some checking at the US postal website. Thanks for helping with this.

I mail pocket knives all of the time without a problem. The issue with pocket knives is how well they are wrapped. The problem is that the blade could protude from the package and cut a worker. I'm not sure about swords though. Try UPS ground it's just about as cheap and the tracking is better.

Gadgetman7,
Thanks for your reply. I will make sure they are packaged extra good. The sword has a sabbard but the bayonet does not. But I will over kill the packing before taking a chance of someone getting hurt.
Thanks,
Jimmy

I currently have a Benchmade listed on eBay. In the description I stated shipping to USA only. Since then, I've had an inquiry from someone asking if I could ship it to Malaysia.

Where would I start to find out if I have any potential liability for shipping a knife to Malaysia? Is it worth the trouble, or should I just play it safe and save myself the effort and worry and just stick to USA only?

Thanks!

Ship US only dude. Too many scammers in other countries.

knives are legal to put in the mail, I get knives in the mail all the time as most of us on these forums do. Just look at all that are for sale here. Whoever told you that you cant mail them is a complete idiot. Tell him to call his boss and ask b4 giving out false info. like that.

You can ship regular knives to the best of my knowledge. Never ship an switchblade via the USPS. They are about the only federal agency other than customs that will go after this offense.

bullcrap there are to many scammers out there mate if your sending packages befor payment more for you in my book.

btw ihave never had anyproblems importing anything in to australia, i do ocanally get asked to collect the weapon but thats about it.

Jeff, as much as they may never know, if you package is opened by accident, mis delivered, etc....is it worth a Federal Felony charge when using UPS or FEDEX would not end up in the same violation? There are many reasons why people take chances, but sending a switchblade accross state lines violates the Trade act ( seldomly enforced) using the USPS adds a Federal Felony charge for no good reason to me.

I wasn't contemplating doing it, I was just curious.

I received a bayonet through the USPS...I was surprised the 'packaging' was still in one peice when I got it. It was about a foot long altogether, and the shipper decided it would be a good idea to tape two smaller boxes together, and throw some newspaper inside.

What I would do when shipping a large fixed blade with no sheath is to glue a few more panels of corrugate on the wall of the box nearest the tip, or if you REALLY want to pull out all the stops, cut a small peice of plywood or louan (sp?) and glue that to the inside. And ship UPS with adult signature required...you might avoid a lot of problems that way (the receivers kid getting it, opening it, bringing it to school)...don't know if it could be traced back to you for the blame, but it coulden't hurt to add the sig required.

If the receiver's kid brought it to school, there is no possible way anyone could hold you accountable. They would expel the stupid kid. How is that any different than the kid grabbing a kitchen knife?

As far as packing knives, bare blades are no problem to send. Put a cardboard sleeve over the blade & wrap the knife tightly in paper.
