Hi all,

I need some help with a decision. I'm thinking or getting a HI Khukuri, probably the 16.5" WWII but am worried about problems getting it in. Has anybody any experiences to relate shipping them to SE Asian countries like Singapore & Malaysia?

Thanks
Andrew L

Mohd, speak up!

Mohd has had experience with numerous instances of importing HI's to KL. He's been quiet lately, but write me offline and I'll try to get his email to you.

... He's been quiet lately ...
Hi Rusty - It is true - I just want to ensure that the HIKV won't attact me at this particular time of financial unstability condition! :( I am more a lurker now! I am waiting for the right time to order the cool UBE 18" ... do you have that model in your collection Rusty?

Redvenom - 16.5 WW II ... is a good choice ... I like your taste! I have 18" WW II. BTW ... I guess the one with wooden handle is better and easier to maintain than the horn handle. Saatisal & Hill Walnut woods have beautiful grain.

Shipping to Malaysia is not a problem - Pakcik Bill shipped dozens of Khuks to me (+ my colleage). I sent few Khuks to Terry Sisco for rehandling and Terry also managed to ship those Khuks without problem. Normally I'll ask Pakcik Bill & Terry to write the description of the item as "Nepaly Steel Handicraft" - but I guess a discription "Wooden & Steel Handicraft" is better. Pakcik Bill & Terry shipped the Khuks via USPS insured airmail. Anyhow Express Mail is faster (ie. -/+ 10 days of shipment) and better (ie. in the sense that you can track it's shipment progress via USPS website) but a bit expensive (ie. by -/+ USD 15). If you're lucky then Custom people will release the parcel and you can collect it at the nearest Post Office to your address - otherwise you have to go to KLIA to realease it - you have to pay tax! The other alternative is by asking POSMALAYSIA to release it for you - they charge you about RM 25 - but you have to collect it at it's collection office somewhere at Jalan Tun Sanbanthan near Bangsar there. Just don't forget to put your most sweetest innocent smile on your face when the Custom people inspect this crooked knife!

mohd,

Thanks very much - you supplied pretty much everything I needed to know. I've always been fascinated with khukuris even from my childhood days, and now that I can afford them I'm gonna indulge myself a little. A good khukuri to handle all the big stuff and a small fixed Dozier to handle the delicate stuff and I think I've got my perfect outdoors kit...

An yeah, mohd I've played this part for our customs people before ;)

Cheers

As Mohd has stated, I've shipped dozens of khukuris to SE Asia with no problems to date. As I recall, a couple of khukuris disappeared at KL airport but showed up a month or so later. Do you remember that incident, Mohd, or am I just dreaming again.

Redvenom, meet Mohd. Email sent. Mission accomplished. And while I was sleeping in, to boot.

Mohd, thanks for confirming what I suspected, I can definitely appreciate the predicament. But put in a word anyway now and then while you are lurking. You are, after all, the HI conscience officer. If you don't pipe up now and then, we'll start thinking our consciences are clean ;) .

( See how quickly we try to lay our own duties off onto someone else ? )

Pakcik Bill - you're correct - those were the 12" Silver Mounted Deer Horn Handled Dhankuta and a Village Chainpuri - the postal paper to collect it appear after 3 months! Of course it was the longest wait! That's the reason why nowadays I prefer Express Mail even though it is a bit more expensive.

Rusty - If I'm not mistaken ... it is you who honour me with the appointment as the HI Conscience Officer ... but till now my conscience say that most of HI forumites are better still to take that portfolio rather than me ...

As for Redvenom - you're most welcome - pls don't hasitate to own that 16.5" WW II - yours will be made in BirGorkha which is better product than the one which I owned.

I can't remember who first proposed Mohd as HI Conscience Officer, but it wasn't me. Uncle Bill definitely confirmed it, however.

And Mohd, anyone who thinks he is qualified to be Conscience Officer has just proven he is unfit for the postition.
