Shipping Quenchants US/Can Border Issues?

I'm just wondering if anyone has shipped quench oils across the border, and what shipping method was used and/or if they had any problems?

I'm going to order a pail of P50 from Maxim, and they can ship FEDEX or USPS. I prefer USPS crossing the border because you don't have to deal with brokerage fees, and any customs fees you can pay at the post office in any manner you like. UPS and Fedex force you to pay by check or credit card, and UPS Is now expecting payment on delivery.

My worry is that a chemical such as this may have trouble with USPS crossing the border?

I believe it will have to be shipped FedEx since it will be classified as a hazardous substance. Have them put a copy of the MSDS sheets in with the customs paperwork.

Thanks, I think they prefer Fedex for this reason as well. My gut is telling me to use Fedex and just pay the fees, as it's very seldom I will need to order this stuff. I appreciate the feedback.

Have you thought of using Houton quenches? They are available in Canada and you wouldn't have to worry about getting it across the border.

Yes unky, and I'm fine with either, but I have found Maxim pretty good to deal with as far as customer service, and I'll probably buy one pail to last me ten years, so the extra fifty bucks or whatever doesn't really bother me. You're absolutely right though, it would be easier to ship. But the total weight is 45 lbs which is not bad, I've shipped much heavier items.

I find cross border shopping to be a bit of a hit or miss thing, not with the companies I have dealt with, but the shipping itself. There has been no consistency for me, one time things will come across no hitches, then I will get dinged with a bunch of extra fees, and other times my order will take a month plus to show up. I just wish that thing were consistent from one order to the next, if I am getting hit with fees do it every time so I know its coming, if its going to be 1 month plus for a package to make the 8 hour drive then do it like that every time so I can plan my work around it. I am very easy going, but if I have told someone that I will have something for them by such and such a date, and I am still waiting for a key item when that date grows near I start to get a little edgy:grumpy:

I understand, I have run in to many of the same problems, but even intra-country shipping on some occasions. I find Fedex to be very fast and reliable, but you are guaranteed to be charged extra fees every time -- the amount is up in the air. I usually use USPS and unless the item is >$100 or very heavy, I usually have no fees associated, unless it's something regulated. UPS is about the same as Fedex, except they now expect payment on delivery and do not accept cash anymore. In my case I have nobody waiting on a product from me, so if it takes longer that's fine. By and large, as long as I use USPS I have very few issues shipping things into Canada.. but in this case I think Fedex may be warranted, to avoid unforseen consequences. Houghton K is still an option, I have to give it some thought (I have to preload my Visa anyway).

I would have them use USPS

It's up to Maxim to do the paperwork to get it to you & I think they have likely done it before.
They likely have people specialized in shipping and paperwork.

You can mail diesel fuel and ammunition if it is labelled and classified properly
I'd ask at least.

Fed ex will cost you quite a lot on the weight alone, plus at least 40 to 50 plus in brokerage alone.

Plus Hazmat charges with fedex can easily be an extra couple of hundred more.

I'd go usps, or at least ask maxim for full shipping quotes both ways before making your decision.

Count, they quoted me about $86 for fedex, not including border fees. I'll have to ask if the hazmat stuff is on top of that. USPS was around $100.84, but my worry there is customs seizure/destruction due to hazmat, or just more expensive fees because I've never done that with USPS. I will inquire further before deciding, thanks count.

After playing a bunch of long distance phone tag/pong I have decided to take Unky's advice and just get a pail of Houghton. Where do you buy yours, out of curiousity Unky? I ended up talking to Tony at can-four in BC.

I actually haven't bought any:o but it is one of the things I did a fair amount of research on, you can buy direct from Houghton Canada in 5 gallon buckets. I have the contact info someplace I will see if I can find it for you. Its how Rick Marchand gets his.

I called Houghton after talking to Can-Four and they require I make an account, where Can-Four will just ship me a bucket. Since I probably won't need to be ordering more, I'm just going to use can-four as it's less work.

What part of Ontario are you in? They are in Brampton, if you show up at the door they may just sell it to you in person without the account.

For the life of me I can't seem to find the contact info I had, it was a direct link to the right person and it may have helped getting around the account thing:(

Big Truck + two guys / Road trip to USA = Quenchant score.....Shhhhhhh. Mums the word.

Just kidding, order it in Canada.

On the not kidding side, has anyone checked the border restrictions on bringing a bucket back from, say Ashokan, when visiting the USA on a knife related trip.

last time i enquired about quench K from houghton... they wanted over 500 bucks for a barrel and would not sell it in any smaller amounts..

do you have a website for canfour ?

Greg, no website that I could find but I can give you a phone number when I get to work tomorrow. The barrels were around $800-900 I think.. but they were happy to pail me up a 20L amount. I will try my best to remember, but I'm a bit swamped at work. Send me an email or ask someone to PM me if I happen to forget though.

Hi ... i put a message on your profile.. can't PM for some reason ( probably cause i'm just a reg user )

thanks
Greg

Ya, you have to be at least a basic user to PM, I forgot about that but I thought you might be able to email. I got your message, and emailed you the info. Let me know if you have any questions. I'm ordering today, so with luck I'll have it in a couple weeks (postal service willing).
