I bought a small seb with the intention of selling it because i wanted to handle it and decide if i should buy one next year.

I have a trade lined up in canada and i wanted to know if i need to tighten the picot on it (which is what i read)? It is totally new but still very smooth though i doubt you can flick it open and im not going to try to.

So is there a chance the knife will be lost to customs?

I bought my Sebenza in the US and had it shipped to Canada, together with some other knives (some asisted opening) and had no issues with customs. I guess there's no harm in tightening the pivot a bit just to be sure. Hell, with a knife as simple to take apart as a Sebenza, I'd just ship it disassembled.

I've had REALLY REALLY loose knives make it past, and knives with decent detents seized... I request it tightened every time now.

Stabman gives good advice here. Customs takes the approach that a knife that is loose and can be opened by "gravity" ( ie a flick) is "illegal" even if it wasn't designed to be that loose, so tighten it up to be safe.

there are two screws do i tighten each one in turn?

Might sound stupid but i dont want to mess up a screw.

Also probably a good idea to label it as a 'tool' or something equally subtle.

You can't tighten the pivot on a Sebenza to make the blade stiff. It's not possible.

I personally wouldn't worry about sending it. Just send it with tracking, insurance, and delivery conformation. But if your having seconds thoughts find a US buyer. Less stress that way.

In that case, I second the idea of shipping disassembled. I've received a few knives that way.:)

Me too. ;)

Just to be on the safe side, ask the guy in Canada if he's okay with you sending it unassembled. If its cool, do it that way.

On the other hand.
When Sebenzas are brand new they are pretty stiff to open just using the thumb stud. So I personally wouldn't worry about them bothering with it. Even more so if it's a small. Plus if anything does happen with customs the receiver will have the option to have the package returned to sender.

Either way I think you'll be good.

Now if this knife was going to Australia I would be concerned.
