Hello I know a lot of people here are from over seas, and in the military. I want to ship a knife to my friend in the marines who is in Japan I was wondering what the customs there is like. Does anyone have any experiences shipping there?? All feed back welcome and appreciated. I need to know if he will get it or not.

First of all, your profile doesn't indicate where you are. Every journey begins with a first step. So the journey of your knife to Japan must also begin with a first step. However, if that first step hits a land mine, then the journey won't ever reach its end. The likihood of your knife hitting a landmine on its first step -- and what procedures might minimize that chance -- depends (in many ways)on where that first step will be made.

It's possible someone wiser will come along, however until that time let me be the first one to say......WHAT THE HECK? :)

hambone64 I don't have any experience shipping to marines, but I do shipping to the army and air force. The last knife package I sent to that region was to Okinawa via a military address. There were no problems and if I remember correctly no customs forms. I think military addresses are considered CONUS as far as the USPS is concerned, but please confirm with a postal employee.

Thanks for the response i am also shipping to Okinawa About how long does it take for a package to get there i will be shipping it from the east coast U.S.A.
Oh and Gollnick i have no clue what you are talking about.

From the day I shipped it to the day he received the knife was a little over 1 month. However I have no idea how much of that was actual "shipping" time versus "delivery" time once in military hands.

First off, welcome to the forum.

And every journey ends with one also, or does that go with, "Every journey begins with a single step"?

He was asking where you were from because there might be different precautions you should take if you were from the US or another country which could cause a snag somewhere along the way. I hope I didnt make as much sense as him.

It's risky, mildly. A friend of mine had two sets of speakers 'disappear' en route to Korea while we were stationed there. Every package sent to me arrived all right though, and I ordered a lot of stuff. As for time, it varies. It could take 2 days, it could take 2 weeks. I experienced both. What you're doing is sending the package to a military post office in California, after that the Marines will take over to get it to the final destination. I'm not sure if customs ever looks at it. Probably. If it's a folder you're probably safe. If it's a big expensive fixed blade I would not send it. There's a good chance it will be taken somewhere along the line.

Hambone64 ,

Just send the package just like regular mail. You will fill out a custom form when you do this. DO NOT PUT JAPAN ON THE PAKAGE! IF YOU DO THIS WILL BE CHARGED AS A INTERNATIONAL PACKAGE!!!!!

Sending to FPO/AP address is just like mailing in the states.

MAKE SURE YOU INSURE IT, RETURN RECIEPT THIS IS TO MAKE SURE! YES SOMETIME YOU HAVE DELAYS BUT IT WILL GET THERE.

Ceya, I'm curious about the insurance for packages bound for military addresses. I was told at the post office that the insurance would only cover delivery to the military. Once it was in the military's hands the insurance would no longer be honored if anything happened to the package from that point forward.

Do you know if this is incorrect? I'd like to know for future shipments, insurance would be great if it covered the entire journey.

Items Shipped VIA the USPS to an FPO/APO are considered Military mail and go at the domestic rate. Note: Some APO/FPO's require customs labels and have other restrictions (knives are not restricted so don't worry:)).

You can find information on restrictions by clicking the link:Overseas Military mail restrictions. The USPS has a whole site dedicated to mailing items to the Military. It can be found here: Supporting Our Troops. Also, you can call (800) 275-8777 and speak to a Customer Service rep. They have more information than you ever need to know about shipping.:)
