Since I'm not having any luck getting the search function to work, does anyone have any do's or don'ts for shipping Busse knives (see mods there is Busse content :D) to Germany?

Thanks
John

It doesn't really matter whether you ship a Busse or any other large blade. Just fill out the custom form properly (value, 'camping tool') and there shouldn't any major problem. It's legal to buy a Busse and it's legal to own one. And if they wanna get you into trouble they gonna do it anyway.
Here in Germany you could have problems because of our new legislation when you walk out on the street with your Busse. You're only allowed to carry larger blades (>12cm) if you have 'legal reasons'. But if the knife is still contained in the box, it should be fine.
People also might get jealous, but you just can't avoid that...:D
Hope that helps you...

ive shipped outside the conus many times, and have never had a package go missing, including a few to germany.

1. i always list the true value on the customs forms. aside from being illegal to falsify, should there be a need to file an insurance claim, a falsified value could cause some dispute over the actual value and ultimately the amount paid back.

2. i always get insurance. ive had nothing but good results using usps priority international mail. it typically costs about $40.

3. as mentioned, list the knife as a camping tool, gift, or some other inocuous title. still truthful, but not revealing exactly what is in the box.

4. i always advise the buyer that i relinquish responsibility once the package has left the u.s.

With the exception of gravity knives & "flick knives" (auto, switchblade), Germany has no restrictions on knife import... But they do have "Knuckle-dusters" on the list, which makes me wonder about knives like the Argonne Assault... Do they make the list because of the finger holes?

My personal experience with overseas shipping...

I:
* Don't lie or misrepresent the value of the item on the Customs Declaration form.
* Always try to insure the package for the same value.
* Mark the item as "Camping Tool (or Camping Knife), made in USA. It is truthful enough as how do I know what the Buyer will use it for?
* Warn the Buyer that if I cannot insure or track the package and if they still want me to sell it to them, that they will be fully responsible should the package not reach the destination (Although I would definitely try as much as possible to help in the recovery of said package. I don't want to lose any knife regardless of who owns it!)
* Get the Buyer to check & verify the destination address to be sure.
* Place another shipping label on the wrapped up knife inside the package in case the knife becomes separated from the shipping box. I do this for ALL knives I ship, CONUS or abroad.
* Wrap that puppy up very well and stuff as much paper around the knife in the box as needed to avoid movement... 1.) this helps get it there without any damage, 2.) it's harder to detect what is in the box without opening. i.e. shaking the box will not help to provide a clue as to whether or not it's worth stealing.
* KEEP the Customs declaration form and ALL receipts from the transaction at least until I am SURE that the knife is in the hands of the Buyer.

I hope this helps ya! :)

"Kitchen Implement" is another excellent euphemism for the Customs forms. I'm not sure I could put it on a package carrying a Battle Mistress but hey!

I am in Germany , i got always my Mail , till now i have 4 Battle Mistresses and ontario big machete. you can send big Pixed blade to Germany , but auto.Knife longer than 8.5 cm is illegal or weapon(gun or Rifle) .

I tried to ship to Germany last week.

The USPS said you could not ship knives to Germany.
Said even if I put "camp tool" or "kitchen tool" and it got looked at in customs they would keep it and I would get any insurance $ back.

Maybe they don't know what they were talking about, but all 3 including postmaster told me the same. So I had to go by what they told me, all I knew to do.

What??? LOL, I think they need to be re-educated @ your PO... ;):D

Prohibited items
The introduction of certain items into Germany is absolutely prohibited. These items are listed in art. 37 WaffG (Gun- Control Law) and in art. 8 First Regulation to the Gun- Control Law.
Among others, these are in particular:

firearms that may be taken to pieces and shortened,
firearms, cutting weapons and thrust weapons which pretend to be other items (e.g. knives hidden in a normal consumer good),
fully automatic self- loading weapons (sub- machine guns and machine guns),
flick knives and gravity knives,
strangulation instruments, so- called "nunchaku",
precision slingshots,
steel rods, black- jacks and knuckle-dusters,
made useless fully automatic self- loading war weapons and their replicas,
night and laser target instruments for firearms.

would they consider a knife a cutting weapon? a busse Combat knife?

My PO may just need educated, not re-educated:D:confused:

Since there federal, and the only PO nearby I just do what they say.
Heck our laws confuse me, much less keeping up with others since I don't sell that much. I still tried to argue with them:D...but lost:(

edit- just saw your link Ed, Thanks. The lady(and postmaster) at PO told me anything with an edge could be considered a weapon there, and could be confiscated:confused: I could see how they could if checked and the knife has "Combat" on it:confused:

also had no idea they would not accept certain(express) packages insured over $500

How long does it usually take in order for a package to clear customs, and do they advise the receipient if the package "fails" customs?

Make sure the word ANTHRAX does not appear anywhere on the outside of the package. Make sure you do not dust the inside with white powder.

THEY HAVE NO SENSE OF HUMOR ABOUT THIS. Don't ask. :o
