Hey Folks,
I might be doing some horse trading for some wood with a member here that lives in Canada. When we mail the packages across the into the other country, is there anything particular that has to be done? Do we need to have a particular label on the box to tell what is in it? Does the wood have to be treated before it gets shipped out? There are no signs of bugs in the wood, but should I bake it before sending it out? If I was to bake the wood before sending it out, what is a good temp to bake it at and for how long? Till it's medium rare? lol.

Thanks for any suggestions

Just put it in a box and send it, that's what I do. The declaration form will ask you to describe the contents. "wood handle material" is perfect. :D

Say treated and cover with finish if shipping overseas. Legally, the interior temperature must be 140 degrees which kills any bugs. Do not say knife or gunstock blank materials or it may be returned. On the customs form, you can mark No Value, Sample material.

They say for a dehumidification kiln you heat to 135-6 for 24 hours. The wood had to get that hot in the middle and stay that way for a few hours.

Seems like you are not supposed to ship wood with bark on it ?? but that shouldnt matter to you?

I usually label wood handle material as "craft wood". I've shipped many a package to the states like that without any issues. Be sure to also mark as "gift" and "no value" on the customs declaration label.

The only package that did not show up in the states(Illinois) contained wood that I had previously treated with Pentacryl. Possibly the smell triggered a mechanical sniffer of some sort(??).... not sure.... never found out.
