I’m about to invest in my first high-end flipper. I’ve narrowed the brands down to Shirogorov and Reate. They both have several models I like. I welcome all input regarding which way to go, but please keep in mind I’m not holding country of origin against either maker.

Cheers for whatever info you’ve got for me!

Kinda apples and oranges, I'd say if any Reate knives really speak to you then save your $$ and go with that  They're certainly top quality and awesome value. Shiro is a whole other tier. I don't think you can beat Reate for absolute value for top notch fit and finish, their machining work is pretty stellar.

No info to share, as I have never handled either brand, but the Quantum ( 1st gen especially ) is one of the best looking knives I have ever laid eyes on. So that’s what I’d pick

I’d definitely say take a look at some of the Begg Steelcraft reate knives, those are pretty stellar. The ChAves stuff tbey do is fantastic. As noted thoigh shiro is a notch or three above.

I have a couple F95’s and a F3 and they’re more pleasant to flip and carry/use than the Reates I’ve had (Torrent, Jack, Future). Reate knives are great and as mentioned in this thread, they’re great for the value. However, I’d rather have a Shiro F95T than a handful of Reate models.

I have a Gen 2 Quantum. It‘s an exceptionally well built/designed knife. The milling, tolerances, and action are simply fantastic (and they should be for that price).
Curious if you’ve had problems with the pivot loosening? I’ve had that on my f95 and neon, but they’re free spinning so I hate to use loctite. That’s been my only gripe with shiro, which I know they’ve started to address on some new models.

I’m definitely curious about this as well.

I had 3 Reate made knives and IMO they are overrated.
So between Reate and shiro I will pick the shiro

Hard to swallow pill: Shiros are severely over-priced. You’re not paying for the knife, you’re paying for the name and the style. Reate makes knives comparable in quality and performance for half the cost. I’m not knocking shiros as they are nice knives, but they aren’t $1,000+ knives. They cost that much because everyone wants one. If everyone wanted a Reate, they’d cost $1,000+ as well.

If you want a Shiro, consider an Ursus as an entry model. If you like the Ursus, you’ll know Shiro’s are right for you.

Most Shirogorovs are both too expensive and too big for me. I had a Neon briefly, but wasn't super impressed with it.

I've never owned a Reate branded knife as none of their designs really appeal to me, but I have many knives made by Reate for other brands. Pena, Liong Mah, Sharp By Design, etc. have all been excellent. Can't go wrong with Reate's quality.

Shiro pricing is sadly set by the one and sole distributor in North America....

They're great knives but so does Reate.

Just buy whatever grips your nuts the tightest and that should be your only justification.

I think both are overpriced. I briefly owned a Reate made knife, and have handle several, including Pena and Mah, and didn't see them as being a step above say WE's higher end knives.

On the flip side, I've handled one Shiro. Great action, but not worth $900. A step up from Reate for sure though. I like Cheburkov designs better anyway, and a bit less money.

If you are thinking of spending $700+, you should look at customs, Olamic, etc as well.
