Meanwhile in Russia
Hi everyone!
This review is dedicated to a brand-new knife of Shirogorov Brothers Inc. Hati 3D Seashell. This knife was manufactured by newly created Custom Division that specifies in making top quality and best authentic specification knives in SBI under personal control of Sergey Shirogorov.
The Custom Division was announced in April 2014 and first knives produced by it were shown on the Arsenal knife fair in Moscow right after that in spring. The knives presented on the fair were distributed through lottery in which anyone could participate leaving application at the booth. Application was free of charge so the winner was supposed not to get a knife for free of course, but obtained the right to buy it
Every day some specific knives of CD were played off. I was lucky to get this Hati Seashell 3D on the very first day of the fair. The funny thing was that I did want to get a Hati Seashell since November 2013, when on previous Arsenal knife fair Shirogorov Brothers presented this new model of Hati and some others (Flipper 3D Seashell and 111 in 3D Ti scales). Knives were perfect and boomed great interest among advanced Shirogorov knives fans but it was unclear how one can get it as the applications for buying these knives were not accepted - a big intrigue for us that was raised. Luckily as I said I was one among 6 six winners of the Hati Seashell at the fair. Just as a reminder - Hati is a modification of Flipper 95 with from scale made of G10 or CF, other is full Titanium with a frame-lock.
And what we have here:
Knife Specs
All the overall dimensions are same to standard 2D Hati:
Opened length 8.78 (22.3 cm)
Closed length - 5.03 (12.8 cm)
Blade length 3.75 (9.5 cm)
Lock frame-lock
Clip not reversible, tip-up
Roller-bearing system (!)
Weight is 136 g. (that is 20-25 g. more than standard Hati)
The handle is also thicker due to 4,5 mm 3D machined scales and is 14,3 mm.
Lets have a closer look on the knife.
The first thing that drives attention is a Silver Twill front scale - 3D machined and have a varying look in the light especially in the sunlight when there is an effect that beams of sunlight go through the scale. Unfortunately Im not skilled in photography so my pictures do not show the real play of lights.
On the front side this a logo of SBI and three extracts and diagonal pattern which are reflective to the ones made on the Ti plate.
Besides nice pattern Titanium plate has a polished finishing and machined pockets inside for lighter weight.
Pocket clip and backspacer are also made of Ti and anodized blue. Pocket clip is of new design that is related to Seashell mods of Hati and Flipper 95
Frame has a steel crack inside that works as a frame stabilizer.
If we look on the inner side of Ti scale we see Custom Division printed and the knife number.
Numeration is historically ordered in production starting from 1 to eternity so every knife of the CD will have its personal number to track.
On the other side we see a symbol of roller-bearings that are installed in the pivot.
The bearing has two rows and looks like the following. In the Ti and Silver Twill scales there are hidden hardened steel washers to protect the scales from wear out and better sliding of rollers. The bearing system works silently and really smooth with absolutely no horizontal blade play in deployed state and vertical blade play in locked state - a rock-solid blade lock-up. Can be compared with MRBS that is used in knives made in collaboration with Dmitry Sinkevich (aka SiDiS).
Knife is perfectly balanced and lies in the hand very comfortably due to ergonomic handle shape and optimum thickness.
Some words about the blade. It is 95 mm long, nicely centered and stonewashed.
Accurately manually processed bevels grind of the blade has machined extracts with dents from the back with polished slopes and back of the blade itself.
S90V top steel, commonly thin bevels grind (0,2-0,3 mm) and hair-popping sharp edge all together grant a perfect cut.
What summary I can made? Frankly speaking this is the best made knife of Shirogorov Brothers I have at the moment. One can argue the design or color scheme, it is a matter of taste for sure, still what is true the accuracy and precision the knife parts are manufactured, assembled and fitting each other all is made clockwork like with wise logics. This is a new level of quality I dare say. The high price and small quantities CD are produced is a natural fact in this relation in Russia these knives are only distributed on the fair lotteries and through auction sales.
For me, Shirogorov Brothers maintain a permanent interest in their knives bringing more features to the standard models, conquering new fields in technology and perfection. As a proof CD is another step in their production and I do hope to see here fresh ideas born and realized.
Custom Division evolution goes on!
All the best and a sharp edge,
Dmitry
