Shirogorov: My Point of Diminishing Returns

I believe everyone who says Shirogorovs are incredibly well made, and their designs are elegant simplicity. That said, $700-$900 for production framelock flippers is for someone with far more disposable cash than I have. I just hope ZT makes a Shirigorov design for $250 one day.:D

Structuraly, there is hardly any difference between a ZT, Reate, Shiro etc. Ask yourself this, what is the proof that one is worth more than the other? Have you had a floor walk of their factory? Do you know their steel is more chemically pure? better heat treat from extensive scientific testing? better fasteners? better milling etc.? The reality is that 90% of all opinions are based on cosmetic design. A shiro looks more elegant than a ZT, subdued muted colours and finishes that look very classy. ZT have a much more loud and experimental look, but their machining is almost always flawless also. I don't own ZT's any more but I had for years and i'm a structural design nazi. I inspect every spec of every fastener and design choice on knives cos I enjoy it.

Cosmetics make a huge difference in an asking price. Shiro came to the market with a simplistic design and look similar to CRK, offered high end steel out the gate and didn't over-do it, they have a bit of mystery to their asking price and their lesser known Russian heritage. I personally would never buy one, because i've inspected them first hand inside and out, for me and my needs i feel CRK knives are built far better, the fasteners and washer design alone leave Shiros for dead in the build dept imo... but Shiro does use a higher end blade steel if that's your thing. End of the day people will buy what they want if they have the cash and like the look, to each his own. Frame lock flippers are just completely soul-less to me these days, the top brands all look and feel the same.

I definitely agree about ZT’s quality. I have a 0900, that I plan on keeping the rest of my life, and I would love to have a Sinkevich 0462.

Apples and Oranges, never seen a CRK that flipped as well as a Shiro.. Completely different blade profile too..

I don't think you could've missed the point any more if you tried :)

I'm talking about build quality and the price/value/quality ratios. If you're under the impression a CRK was ever designed to flip in any way shape or form you are severely mistaken. CRK are about subtlety, class and refinement, they are built to last and their warranty and philosophy of encouraged maintenance reflects it. They have zero interest in the latest flipper fad craze. As per the evidence of what's out there - any half wit out there with a knife shop in Chinas outback can make a flipper.

I find Shiro's attractive but overpriced I know price is highly subjective but I suspect the bubble to pop when it becomes public knowledge that the parts are made in China. They make a nice knife and for 4-500 I would own at least one.

I honestly don’t know why a Shirogorov would be worth so much if it had all Russian parts. China is the richer of the two countries.

I always thought the premium for them was because there were no/limited local dealers/warranty depts anywhere other than Russia? (And Recon1) Like table price vs. secondary price? Don't they go for less if you're actually in Russia?

I’ve seen secondary prices on Neon’s come down a bit, but not quite far enough for me personally. I really love their designs but I’m in the same boat as the OP. The laws of diminishing return are going to keep these knives out of my pocket unless there’s a bubble that bursts hard.

I guess that’s just an elegant way of saying I still can’t afford one! ;)

If I could afford one, I would probably treat it like jewelry instead of an actual knife. If I can’t treat it like a knife, it’s no fun!

Prices have been coming down if you know where to look and aren't SUPER picky.. Like in the $600-$700 range for a 95-T in S90V and under 600 for one in S30V.. Still expensive but within the realms of a nice Sebbie or so..

Care to elaborate on where to look for these deals? The exchange?

There was one there the other day for under $600 IIRC. Facebook groups are a really good source although you have to do your homework so you don't get burned by a stranger there. But you should be doing that regardless of where you're buying anyway.. USN had some around 6 bills recently too.

I would post some that were here but everyone got rid of their prices after the sale..

Shiros are just the latest "controversial because of the price" knife. Nobody really quarrels they are nice knives; many people balk at the price. I don't think there's much to add to that conversation at this point. If that price actually begins to fall (or rise, for that matter), this issue might be worth revisiting.

I had thought that Shiro’s parts were kade in China too but apparently that is not true. It is true for CKF but apparently Shiro has pictures of their parts being manufactured in a Russian shop.

I actually heard it was Kevin John making the parts for CKF.
