In the thread "The Man who found Mallory" Conrad Anker described in National Geographic how he found George Mallory, missing since 1924, this past May first.

Late Tuesday Anker, Alex Lowe, and David Bridges were caught in the open by an avalanche. Anker survived with broken ribs and battering, but Lowe and Bridges have remained unfound and are presumed dead.

has more information. In fact, if you scroll down on the lower right corner of the page, there are links to stries from the May 1 expedition that found Mallory, including reports from the search team members on each person's impressions.

Yesterday's USA Today also ran this story on their front page, along with a picture of Alex Lowe. Sobering news. Mother Nature has my deepest respects.

If my memory is still intact I think in 1934 Nepal suffered a devastating earthquake which, of course, resulted in creating some avalances. They are due for another and I fear greatly for Kathmandu and the Valley. The building codes there are almost non-existant and I know many of those building are going to crumble into nothing when the earthquake comes. It will take a lot more lives this time.
