Shiva Ki blades

What does everyone think of Shiva Ki knives? Some people don't seem to care for him but what about his knives? I have one that I bought last year. I have heard criticism about the guard fit but the Merc I have is extremely tight. Some people don't understand the silk wrap on the handles which mine doesn't have but the Japanese used it for hundreds of years with no problems with blisters. And many believe they were the greatest swordsmen in the world. The edge is the sharpest of any knife I have ever owned. I heard that Bill Moran said he had no idea how Shiva attained such a sharp edge.
Also, he backs his knives with a lifetime guarantee on repairs and free sharpening service. I really like the styles of the Mercs and his Spirit blades. He is making three more knives for me with Ironwood handles. Any comments or experiences?

Too much drama at his website for my taste. Some of the knives look nice; I've never seen one in person though.

Best Wishes,
-Bob

I believe the search function would be helpful in this instance. A cursory review would seem to indicate that the quality of the blades is held in much higher esteem than the character of the maker. Fortunately, we have enough custom makers around here who excel in both regards that I wouldn't waste my time.

I heard the reason the Catholic Church has suppressed all true translations of the Dead Sea Scrolls is because they contain prophesies that in the 21st Century a knifemaker named Joe Blow will make sharper knives than anyone has ever made before. You can believe it, too; I heard it from Joe Blow himself.

bhaurer, you seem to have a fixation on this man. Counting this thread you have posted 5 times (more if you count your apologies for posting his philosophy) on him out of 14 total posts and always speak of him very highly. So why at this juncture are you bothering to ask anyone's opinion? It seems your opinion is already formed and frozen in cast iron. Move on.

really, whats up with that lol, i suppose his stuff is ok but it should be for the $$ involved, i dont know that his stuff has any great advantages over any other 20 decent 'smiths though.

a lot of folks dont like the guy but he seems to have some buds who do like the man, maybe he just doesnt come across well on the 'net??

thanks for the laugh cougar, i needed that lol.

Yep.He didn't come across very well here at BladeForums.
Do a search.

I have several Merc's and several small Spirit blades and I am well pleased with them.
A while back I sent one to Jimmy Fikes,he and Matt Lamey did some testing with it,rope cutting & 2" X 6" chopping,it did very well,IMO.
You'll find it if ya' do the search.
There are a lot of great makers, making great blades.

Having known Bill Moran for just over 30 years, I can say that this is a false statement. I never heard Bill wonder about anyone else's edge or blade quality including Shiva Ki's. I do know that some of the most senior members of the bladesmith society did not hold the smith in question in particular high regard. There are no secrets or rocket science to making a good sharp blade. That is why Bill Moran started the bladesmith school in Washington Arkansas, to teach the right way to make a superior blade and dispel the myths and B.S. hype that some people will use to sell their wares.

Any member of the American Bladesmith Society that has the master smith stamp should be able to make just as good a knife as Shiva Ki, but without all the drama.

Unfortunately, good sense and honesty don't seem to have as much PR value as 'drama.'

Kudos to jackknife for a dose of reality.

He makes a very good knife.
The problem I have is that there are many who make a very good knife or better that do so with respect to other makers and without all the made up and hyped stuff.

I would rather have a knife from someone who I respect. If I am going to spend the money on a custom, the person behind the knife is just as important as the knife to me.

Others do not care about the person behind the knife and the behavior they exhibit. Nothing wrong with that.

It is just my preference. To each our own. That is one of the things that makes this hobby interesting and constantly growing.

Shiva Ki is not the jerk he appeared to be when he posted here. He makes very good knives that are very sharp. He has made comments about other makers that I personally find offensive, but he did apologise. I think he has a huge ego and tends to promote his knives with the use of hyperbole. The fact is though, his knives are darn good.

What Bastid said, and what Bronco said, is exactly why I will NOT ever buy one of Shiva Ki's knives.

I wonder if he has to pay royalties to the French Foreign Legion for using their metro para badge as his logo.

When I see a website full of egoist pictures of the subject in various states of mis-matched military dress, or all sorts of martially artsy poses, my instincts scream "POSEUR!".

All the real operators I know (I'm not one) don't make it a point to advertise their military activites. They have nothing to prove to anyone, to them it's just a job they happen to be good at. Same same for the best fighters. Some of the greatest fighters and instructors you'll never hear about.

Maybe this is another Strider thing? I guess the difference is that Ki makes a good blade, even though I personally think they're kinda ugly, and NO knife is worth what he wants for them. Even before Strider was exposed as a fraud I never cared for his blades. They were/are nothing special, severely overpriced, and I have yet to pick one up that feels good in my hand.

Welcome to the forums.

This thread is not a good choice for your first post. He fell from grace here and this whole subject is a dead horse and needs to remain so. However if you want to persist that is entirely your choice. I am not trying to be negative or bossy, just giving you fair warning. I hope you continue to post here and enjoy all of the good information and good people here.

Happy new year to all!

Yea, I know. The horse is getting stinky. We don't need a zombie horse running around.
