Hi,

What is the best type of shoes for an urban survival situation and to walk in forest for a few hours: military boots, security boots, walking boots ?

What's a good price for them ?

Thanks

I went into Big 5 and bought their 30 or 50 dollar "Hi Tec" brand, ankle-hi leather boots. They are kind of like beefed up sneakers. They are more durable than sneakers, support your feet and ankles, and permit you to carry a backpack OK, plus they are light.

My New Balance sneakers didn't provide my feet any support at all for backpacking.

I only like combat boots when I'm hunting, and want to keep dirt and stickers out of my shoes.

I wear a good pair of hikers. They generally offer good support and comfort. Don't scrimp on your footwear, get the best that you can afford, especially for the type of duty you're asking them to do.

I only wear restling shoes or mocs. Much quieter and lets you feel the ground. I never carry a pack so weight isn't a problem.

Yeah -- I usually wear Otomix wrestling shoes. Actually, it's a martial arts cross-training shoe called the Stingray boot. When it gets wet, I wear sandals or go bearfoot. (I'm in Florida, so temperature is rarely a consideration.) -- Bear

I too have been thinking about shoes, I have been working on some slient tracking and was thinking about those Ninja low Tabi boots.

If you haven't worn Tabis yet I think you'll find their major advantage is balance. Having your big toe work independently of the rest of your foot really enhances your balance.

Aside from that, though, I don't think they have much to commend them to urban and woodland survival -- at least nothing over a moccassin. And you need special socks.

A survival situation...

I'd think a hybrid between running shoes and steel toed boots! My solution.. I picked up some craftsman marked Redwings at sears the other day, 80 bucks for a 170 dollar boot! They are COMFY! Wouldnt want to hike out of anywhere with them... heavy suckers, but I dont think they are going anywhere! :D

I've been looking for a good pair of moccassins - anyone care to provide some links?

Like Bear, I too live in FL. I normally wear sandals or go barefoot but when it gets colder or when I travel, I have found that perfect cross-between-a-sneaker-and-a-steel-toed-boot in Bates Enforcer series boots. They are made for SWAT & are very light & comfortable yet have a steel toe & steel shank. Mine are side-zips so I normally wear them for flying (easy to take off & on to go thru metal detector). I have done a little hiking in them too & they are great for that purpose.

around here we put our footwear to the test and redwing boots seem to hold up the best, we use steel toe and have such things as tractors and cows on my toes over the years and the steel toe has kept my feet safe.I also walk long miles on traplines in the fall and these boots are good for alot of walking.
