Shooting Range Ammo

I recently purchased my first handgun, HK P2000sk (.40 S&W), and want to head to the range to shoot it from time to time. Ammo is none too cheap generally speaking and I'm curious what brand, maybe what places to buy it, or maybe just a price range I should be expecting to pay at a local hunting/sporting goods/general store so I know if I'm overpaying. For example I've seen a box of 250 rounds for $99 at my local Gander Mtn. I don't recall the brand but I wonder if that's just far too much to pay for ammo to waste at the range or if thats typical price for that caliber and amount. Thanks guys.

250 rounds for $100 doesn't sound too far off what I've seen for cheap ammo, I'm not exactly sure on the price of .40 but winchester white box from wal-mart is right around that price point and from what I understand (not much) you're not going to get too much cheaper than that without buying complete junk or reloading it yourself.

Also... just cause someone else is going to say it anyway so I might as well do it now, get a .22 for cheap fun shooting at the range.

Buy reloaded ammo at a reputable gun store. It is much less expensive than the 50 rd bricks.

It's not hard (least round here) to get it for $16/box for factory new. That gander stuff is prob those Remington UMC boxes and that comes down to $20/box, not a good deal.

Give Wal-Mart a try. They have the 250 round packs of .45 auto here for about $96, so I'd imagine .40 would be significantly cheaper.

285 for 1000 rounds shipped is about as good as you can get. 180 grain, FMJ, brass casing. PRVI PARTIZAN.

PMed you the link. I order ammo from them from time to time when I'm too lazy to reload.

Hopefully, you are not "wasting" ammo at the range. The goal is to learn from the ammo you discharge at the range.

I've been paying about $38 US for 100 rounds of white box Whinchester at BassPro. A little better than the $22 or so for 50 rounds of whatever at the range. I think there was only one brand that was cheaper at BP but I forget what it was. Shooting is kind of expensive.

I have used the Walmart Winchesters, and they are really dirty. They leave burnt powder residue on the exterior of the muzzle after a few dozen rounds. After a hundred or so rounds it would cake on there.

I much prefer the "Shootin size" boxes that Magtech produces. They are more powerful, and they are extremely clean. If you pick up your used shells and look at them, they are still shiny on the inside.

To me the Magtech were worth it.

$100 for 250 rounds is too expensive. I just picked up a box of 100 rounds of .40 at Wally World for $33.97. It's winchester FMJ target rounds, it's best price I can find that is brass. They have Steel Case ammo for the .40 for $15 dollars a box but have read mixed reviews from folks about the ammo and that steel case ammo is hard on extractors on certain guns but whether that is true or not seems to be a debate on the web. I also saw they have a box of $250 .40 for $77.

I was about to say the same thing. IMHO, "waste" is a poor choice of words

Ammoman has Privi Partizan 40 S&W 180 gr for $285 per 1000 delivered. That comes to $14.25 per box of 50.

Privi Partizan makes excellent ammo.

Yeah, the best price I can find for 40S&W is $265 for 1000 rounds. Shipping will probably be around $20

Thanks for all the replies everyone, even those of you that feel the need to over-analyze the words I chose to use :P I do see your point, waste is not the right word and no, I don't see it as just wasting rounds at the range. I am indeed trying to learn and improve my shooting. Henceforth, the word "waste" will not be used when I reference firing ammo. lol

Purchased the 1000 Prvi Partizan from ammoman @ $285. Thanks again everyone.
