I have a bad itch for a Freedom Arms 454. You can have it made with additional cylinders for 45 colt, 45 ACP and .45 Win Mag.

And then there is the .500 Wy Express.

Which reminds me; I was in Alaska fishing with this guy who was carrying a .44 Mag. I asked why he didn't get a .454 and he said they were too expensive. To which I said. "Well if you have to stop a Brown Bear, you are going to wish you spent the money."

It was on of my best moments.

Tony,
Tell your friend that your were/are right on the money with your comment. I read somewhere that, at least as of a few years ago, there is/was not a single written confirmed report where somebody stopped an attacking Brown with a .44 mag and lived to tell about it. Just FYI.:D

Nice!! Snakeskin/satin combo is always sweet. Now, where the hell was I when the wardens were at the company Store ? ;)

Well he wasn’t stupid, when I saw him the next year he had a Stainless Marlin lever action in 45/70.

As with anything, it is the rght equipment for the right use. There are certain types of Ammo that you can use to kill big game even in a smaller caliber. Garrett Ammo's 330 Grain Hard Cast travelling at 1400 fps in a 44 magnum will kill pretty much anything this side of the atlantic.

However, if you are talking about stopping a charging brown bear in it's tracks, well, I would feel undergunned with anything less than 416. Charging, adrenalized animals can usually only be stopped with spinal shots, or shots that have so much shock value that the animal has to stop and take notice.

A rifle round that most would consider minimal for brown bear is still much more powerful than a 454 or a 44. So these things are in lieu of carrying two rifles or because you are backpacking.

Do you guys remember the park ranger that was attacked by a grizzly and killed it with his 357 magnum?

I would not sell a 44 mag to get a 454 when I could use Garretts ammo and I would be just as well equipped.

I remember reading a story of an Inuit that killed a polar bear with a 22 caliber rifle. Not sure what kind of 22 though. Hit him in th eye and probably hit the brain. Lucky shot.

Yes his was an all stainless custom job. When I came home I nearly bought one. But living in San Francisco I'd have more use for a back ho.

Yep, kind of hard to beat a little "back ho" action.......................
