This is the shop 2 version of a short sword, I guess. It is too light to be called a Sirupati. It weighs only 1 lb. 6 oz. which is less than a fifteen inch Ang Khola. Overall length is 21 inches, blade a bit less than 3/8 inch thick, and a bit under 1.5 inches in width. Finish is excellent and hardening seems right. Scrollwork and brass inlay nicely done. The karda has a four inch blade. Entire rig is very well done. It feels feather light in the hand and is very quick. This definitely is not a prybar that cuts! Serial number is 8C whatever that means and "made in Nepal" is steel stamped on left side of blade. It lacks the HI marking so I must assume it was made by a resident village kami but will carry the full HI guarantee.

Anybody looking for a top quality short sword for $125 call or email.

If I was Jim I would just buy this and grind a false edge on the top of it as desired. Jim, the khukuris grind easily along the spine with a decent file and while soft compared to the actual edge, they will easily last during combat.

Cliff, that's a very good idea. It doesn't have the Chiruwa tang Jim wants but it should work okay as is. This is a later version khukuri and should have gone through the tang test in the shop. It is certainly geared toward "fighter." As I said, definitely not a prybar that cuts like the AKs.

Even if it does not come out exactly as you want it would give invaluable information as you could refer to an existing design when coming up with your ideal model. It would be a great way to get a feel the handling and let you focus down the design parameters accordingly.

Never weighed my 20" HI Chainpuri, so don't know, but it feels like it makes my 1" = less than 1 oz. rule.

This one is 21" and 22 ozs. A bit of work would reduce the weight to make it. In fact, filing and sharpening a false edge would about do it.

I agree with Cliff - Jim should grab this and find out how a knuk handles before he makes any changes. Hey Jim: got a deal - get this one, and if you don't like it, I'll buy it off you.

Rusty, that's a no lose proposition for Jim. But I think everybody knows by now every khukuri I ship has the satisfaction guarantee going with it. If for any reason it's not the knife you want all you need do is ship it back for a trade or refund.

Uncle Bill

That's a very pretty knife!

I think I better pass though. With my luck I'd probably break it. Maybe I better stick to Ang Kholas.

I like this idea of a khukuri short sword though. Is it possible to get a khukuri in, say, a 26" size? I think that size would be just about perfect for a khukuri/sword.

Any advice, Uncle Bill?

Yep, that's it, I WANT IT. I'll EMail ya, Bill, but for the moment consider it sold.

I got the email Jim and replied. Done deal.

Dave I think you should stick with Ang Kholas!

:
Great !!
I believe it will be perfect.
Take it out and give it a good workout.Do things with it you wouldn't consider doing with an ordinary knife.

Perhaps I could say "Stamp" on it. I know it would just make everyone groan though.(vbeg)

Anyway then you will know that you can trust every aspect of the knife
without fail.

Kewl. It looks to be JUST the ticket. Now to score a 4x8 sheet of Kydex like I've been pondering and do a huge tip-up rig in time for K'nugen.

The price-performance on something like this is just *incredible*. If it wasn't for the well-documented positive effect HI is having on the Kami's lifestyles I'd feel guilty.

And Rusty, I understand you had an eye on it and held off giving me a chance. I *really* appreciate that, no joke. If by some tiny chance things "don't work out" between me and this lovely beast you'll have first dibs on it, but I must warn you that the odds of that happening are probably less than that of a WWF fan scoring a degree in Neurology.

Rusty;

Maashaa-llaah! I think your HI 20" Chainpuri must be a great knife in term of shape, length and weight!

Pakcik Bill;

I tell you what - if ever HI come out with a 24" @ 25" Chainpuri - just consider 1 unit of those models as SOLD - of course insyaa-Allaah! TO ME!

I've been doing some measurements...21" overall is very close to the max possible for the tip-up carry rigs I'm fond of. 22", *maybe* 23" might work but it'd be borderline, at 25" I don't think I'd even try.

So Mohd can have any bigger ones that float through the pipe...this pup is juuuuust right for me.

Jim,

Congratulations! I can't wait for your post after it arrives in the mail and you unsheathe the khukuri for the first time. I can still vividly remember how I felt and how impressed I was when my HI shop 1 BAS slowly emerged from its curved cocoon. To this day, I still marvel at its dynamic and agile feel in the hand for such a large blade.
Best wishes with your new companion ,Jim,and welcome to the worldwide fraternity of Himalayan Imports khukuri carrying members. Don't leave home without it.

Actually, the 20" x 20oz Chainpuri is beautiful any way you look at it.

The little 17" x 14oz village chainpuri though, may not pretty with your eyes open, but close your eyes, and it's hardwired into your brain.

Hmmm... call the bigger chainpuris and lighter sirupatis cobras. That makes the 17" Chainpuri and 12" Sirupatis into mongooses.

I gotta run and get this short sword mailed to Jim. I'll be back later to catch up. Thanks to all.

Uncle Bill

Beat the mailman so Jim and other khukuris should be in the air this weekend. Mohd, I'll save a 25 incher for you if one ever comes this way.

Thanks for good input, all.
