After battling the dust in my small shop space (and heeding long-ago recommendations from Stacy and Others), I went ahead and "invested" in a shop air cleaner. this became more important as I move into working more with rosewoods.....

I have always thought of these units as something that gets suspended "flat" from the ceiling - but my options there are really limited. After looking at it - it is just a hefty fan with filters in front of it. Is there any reason I can not simply locate the thing on the floor (on a dolly), rotated on its side (instead of "flat" like it would hang)??? I dont see any harm in doing this .... and my space is so small that it has no problem at all in creating general circulation in the room - no doubt leading suspended particles eventually into its filter. on the high flow setting - it is kind of like a gale in the place :-)

Am I missing something and this is somehow a "bad idea"??? If it works, it is a really good solution for me - both in terms of use of space and the ability to roll it around a little if need be.....

I've seen people use box fans with house air filters taped to them to help clean the air. I run a shop vac constantly when grinding handles to help pull suck up alot of the dust. It gathers up a surprising amount of it. I've yet to try the house filter/box fan idea. I know there is a company that makes a cylindrical unit that stands on the floor. Axiom stratus on Instagram if your inclined to look. They aren't cheap (in my estimation) but definitely cheaper than new lungs.

perhaps I was not clear - I already have the unit in question (its pretty nice, and moves a LOT of air). ... the thing at hand is where / how to locate it.

I also run a shop vac (with dust deputy) with collector below the grinder platen. it does collect a LOT .... but a fair amount still escapes ... carried around I suppose by/on the belt itself. I am going to put plastic around the grinder and run a second shop vac pulling air from that enclosed space ..... but I still need this general air cleaner unit. Like you said - it is better/cheaper than damaging your lungs.....

I would suggest a HF shop cart with the air cleaner on it, but it would also work on a floor dolly. Roll it near where the dust is created and point the discharge away from you. When done for the session/day, put it inthe middle of the area and set the timer for a couple hours.

Thanks Stacy. Is there any reason it can’t be put up on its side instead of flat? The fan bearings, I think, should have no trouble with that?

Ah, nope, my bad. Completely blew by that part.

No problem :-)

I considered the box fan / filter idea ... but with moving more into rosewoods I decided I did not want to take any chances. I have a round reflector style shop light over my grinder ... and in its light beam you can SEE those particles floating about :-(. With the new filter running for a couple hours ... no visible particles :-)
