shop built electric heat treat oven

There was a article in Knives Illusrated a few years back by Peter Martin on building a heat treat oven. I don't know how you would find it but Peter is listed in the knives annual books.

Yeah I remember that article. Now to see if I can find it. I should have the mag.
I would like to build an oven myself. Keep me posted if you find anything Ok?

ISTR seeing a setup somewhere involving Kaowool board, an industrial temperature controller and "suitable" heating elements. Whilst the controllers are readily available on EBay (making sure the upper limit is high enough temp for hardening), I'm not sure about the elements required. Standard oven elements won't handle the temperature.

The easiest thing to do is look in your classified section under crafts or craft supplies. look for a pottery kiln. I have seen them for a little as $50.( more that a single element) If you just have to build one, you can get elements form Texas Knife Makers Supply. or Budget Casting in Sacramento Ca. both have web sites. I have built one and it is not that hard. I calculated the size based on the expanded element length. then I cut and stacked the soft fire bricks. fashioned the shell and door. put in a thermo couple and installed a surplus controller. It should be calibrated, proably the simplest way is with a Tempil Stick.

I will be glad to answer any question based on my experience.
