Years ago, I spent some time working offshore in the Middle East. It was in the early1980s. There were a few hands with access to tools and materials who were making knives as time permitted. Blade steel was from old files and spring steel. One project I witnessed involved brazing brass bolsters either side of the hilt area and brazing a brass half round to the end of the narrow tang as a pommel. Steel plates were then clamped to the brass pieces, forming abox, and the whole clamped down on the welder's steel bench. They torch melted "scrap" aluminum in a ladle and poured it directly into the cavity.

When cooled, this made an unsightly chunk of handle . . .that was slowley worked down with files and sanding grits to make a good looking handle that took a nice polish.

Anyone ever done anything like that?

Older Gerber fixed blades and EDMF (Eight Dollar Mountain Foundry) knives had aluminum handles.
