About once a year I get the urge to build a "Super Knife". I've built this design a bunch of times and each time I improve it a little. Here's this years entry in the Monster Catagory.

LOA: 16.5
Width: 2.25
Thickness: 1/2"
Weight: 1 ton
1050 steel

It should be a good Walking around knife::D

Holy Crapoli!

Peter, that's a monster! If I walked around with that my pants'd be tripping me up! You really have set the bar up a couple notches, eh?

If I may, I'd like to see the grind closer to the spine, which seems like it'd make for a "thinner" profile at the edge. I don't think you'd lose any strength (how could you lose any strength on a knife like this) but would enhance its cutting ability.

That is one cool MF, I'm gonna carry this big fat grin around for days and my relatives here in San Francisco are gonna think I've been up to something kinky... :D

Man, I miss my shop...

Man It looks like you are trying to make a weight set out of yor knives now.I bet that one wore you out when you ground on it.
It is definately a cool looking piece and definately a monster blade.

Christ Peter! You've got to have the forearms of Popeye just to have held that, that THING up to a grinder long enough to bevel it.
A short handled, linear ax!
Or you could surface grind 1/8" off of each side froward and behind the guard for a pretty cool integral.

Thanks everyone. I'm trying to keep as much weight on it as possible. It is intended as a camp tool, both for chopping and for cutting bone. The very first one I did had a fair amount of distal taper. It just did not cut as well as the 20 inch I was using. After that I kept making minor changes to both the grip and grind on the blade. This one has the COP dead in the middle of the belly of the blade. I think it may be the best design yet.
I'm pretty sure it won't be my last. Each time I make one, someone I hunt with begs it from me. I don't expect this to be any different. It's funny because the knife in the picture is the very first one I built. It's also only one of two I've ever kept for myself. I still use it every day.
