Got a call from my Dad last week and he is moving to a assissted living place due to his health getting worse.Donna and me will be flying to Portland,Or. January first. She will stay and come home on the 5th but I will be staying at least a week if not longer to get all his belongings sold and the house ready to sell,Plus we will get him all moved and setteled into his new place.
Then I will be driving his old "71 Chevy 4X4 and pulling a "90 Corsica back across country to get home.He wanted us to have the vehicles and some other items so I said fine.At least I will have a dependable truck again that I can work on myself if need be;)
But this is not going to be much fun due to the time of year. All the passes will be covered with snow and I really don't want to tow a car across the mountains in snow.So I may end up driving to Southern California before cutting across through the desert.I won't know any set leaving date or travel plans until I get ready to leave Portland. This is to bad as I would have liked to make the trip more fun by stopping and visiting a few of you guys,if you didn't mind.Plus if I take the southern route I may stop by the Alamo museum and check out some Bowies. But this will all depend on the weather and how long it takes me to get everything squared away.
I am not going to enjoy being away from Donna and the girls this long at all,but I have to do it and am glad to help my Dad out after al he has done for me over the years.
So if I don't answer emails to quick at the present I am trying to get things caught up in the shop and available knives moved for extra money on the road. Then in January I won't be able to answer any or be on the forums untill I get Home.Boy I will miss you guys also.
Better get off here and get to work.Almost got one done to show off tonight...

Go south and take the I-10/20 combination home. There is a lot of road in bad weather to fight most other routes. Sure, it's a little longer drive but, if you don't arrive home safe and sound, the savings in time and gas really aren't worth it. Trust me, I've tried this before and truly lucked out but, came close to spending several days stranded in my pickup in an ice storm in rural New Mexico (outside Portales) on my way home for Christmas. Some lessons you learn the hard way..... learn from my mistake and don't repeat it.

As for your father, I wish him all the best. It is sort of a good news bad news event but, it is good he is aware of the consequences of his choices and is making a good one for himself and his family.

I have relatives in a similar situation who are very happy in their new living situation. They are surrounded by people who care and will make sure they are healthy, eating well, etc. Having others around that are of a similar age and have similar life experiences should not be under estimated either.

This may be tramatic in the beginning but, it should all turn out to be for the very best in the end as it was for relatives in a similar situation who went to an assisted living situation.

Again, I wish you, your father and, the rest of the family all the best.

if you head from booneville up through memphis then little rock via I40,make the trip up 540 to exit 81 and swing by the ag russell showroom. would love to have you stop in.

hope things work out for your dad. i drove 1-70 from n.cal across the serrias and rockies in winter a few times and i would not want to do it towing a vehice. if you come as far south as los angeles i could offer you a sleeping bag on the floor. i live in a one room batchlor apt. with my shop in my garage down stairs. keep me posted.
