NEVER EVER try to chop wood with a large knife.

i was scrathing my head, trying to come up with a way to split some blocks of wood i got today. so i,not being the sharpest bulb in the deck, decided to take a giant D2 wharny to it.i raised the blade up in the air, brought it down....right on my index finger.
now, i knew there was a bevel on the knife, and knew it would do some damage, but jesus h christ....
my finger is now wrapped up in gauze, and giving me **** when i try to type.
please folks,do as i say,not as i do (cuz im a dumbass and all...)

There is NOTHING wrong with chopping wood with a big knife...
Chopping your finger is another matter altogether!!!

Yikes, Rob, did you take it all the way off or just put a nice gash in it?? Better git to the doc's office and have it cleaned and sewn up good and get a tetnas shot.

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

I know just how you feel Maurice. Last winter I went to a friends cabin for a weekend of shooting and biking. I waS cutting kindling for the fire right after we got there and I lopped off about 1/4" of my left index finger!

Ouch...

Well, First I use an axe to split wood, and second, from when i was 5, my dad always tought me never to have any bodypart on something you are about to hit..no fingers, feet... you get the idea.
So i don't really understand how you finger got on the log in the first place.

Well, hope it heals fast enough so you can typre full-speed again

Trying to swing the knife at a block of wood is pretty innefective for more reasonws than the fact that your missing a finger

Instead, try putting the cuting edge againts the end grain where you want the split to be. Then start tapping the spine with a mallet. The deeper the cutting edge sinks the harder you can hit the knife. Depending on the type of knife and the type of wood its should split pretty easily.

I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer... but I've got the sharpest knife in the room.

I'd hold off on that Sharpening Seminar for a while if I were you....

Hope you heal up soon Maurice!
