I have found by accident that Chain Saw Bar Oil is great for preserving blades in storage, tools, etc. The trick is to dilute the oil with enough mineral spirits for it to be free flowing. When the solvent evaporates it leaves a stiff waxy film on the surface that is hard to wipe off. I believe that the bar oil has parafin in it to thicken it up and hold it on the bar. Used as above it feels like the expensive preservative stuff sold in aerosol cans for guns.
