I never could find a good steel punch the right size for knocking pins out of my knives after a trial fit. The ones I got were too big so I ground em down and then they just bent over. I was messin around in the shop and took a piece of 5/16" steel rod and drilled a hole in one end with the size bit I use for my pin holes. Then I took an old drill bit that size and tapped into the hole, cutting end first so the shank sticks out. I tapered it a little and it works great. Nice and hard and just the right size. Tonight I did the same thing with some 5/16" and 1/4" rod and the drill bits and made some trial pins. Nice when you can make something that works.

hi mike.
just me saying hi. haven't talked in a while. i'm gonna start forging damascus soon. hehehe. gonna be one fun project. i'll have to post a picture of the end results. should take a while though, the forge ain't quite done yet. we've recently almost finished pouring the refractory. i can't wait to fire it up.

Cool Idea for all my dull bits that arent anygood for anything else.

Are these drill bits completley worn out?
If not, why not sharpen them?

It's not that hard and anyone that can grind the nice lines I have seen on this forum shouldn't have any trouble.

And for you guys that forge damascus do you save the old drills for putting in the mix?
