Great shop - lotsa toys. But waaay too clean - go dirty it up by making knives. :) Shadow looks like a great shop helper.

Nick - What are the dimensions of your shop? That's a lot of gear in what looks to be not a lot of space!

Very well equipped, well organized and CLEAN!

A set-up like that has to be very motivating.

Really nicely laid out. I honor your sense of construction and organization. It's MORE machinery than I would have imagined. WOW!

Thanks for this. Impressive. Enjoy your work!

I hope that the ability to acquire this machinery, and the drive and ingenuity to place it so intelligently all come together and form the output that the world so justifiably desires.

Nick, you want to accomplish an awful lot in this world, and sadly, a lot of that requires money that even the most prolific and better paid of custom knifemakers seem to lack in any great quantity.

It is my most sincere wish that you can get the money you need to support a family, and find the time to make knives. It is hard to do.

Best Regards,

Nicky, you have all that beautiful and well arranged equipment so you can HAND RUB finish knives???:D

Paul

WOW!! You have an awesome shop Nick! Hope to see MANY knives being made by you....so perhaps I could even get one:D

I am very impressed. I have a large shed that I work in but I dont have anywhere near the fun toys you have. Your vice and anvil make mine have "size envy:p"

Thanks guys :)

It's sort of a false front in a way, as the new lathe and mills have not been used yet (well I did turn two buttons for Paul with the lathe ;) ). The new-2-me machines weren't even supposed to go in this shop, they were supposed to wait until I move to a bigger shop... but it had to be brought in... so there it is.

So no... ALL of that stuff is not needed for me to make knives. ;) :) Mostly I wanted the machines because I learned how to use that stuff when I got sent back to school and doing "job shop" type work is a good way to supplement income on top of the pennies that knife making brings ;) :)

It IS almost always that organized... it just wasn't so dang cramped before.

FYI, I have a standup Wilton bandsaw, (2) drill presses, a KMG grinder, A small 1" Kalamazoo grinder, a grinder/buffer, another 6" belt/rotary sander, a TON of Foredom tools and bits, A small new lathe (yet unused), (2) benches and a dust collector bag.

All from an era where I thought I'd do some knifemaking. Not going to happen soon. Neither is selling them. For the infrequency I use it, I am quite satisfied to have it there, and organized for me, when I feel ready.

I left the production aspect alone. Only you know what feels right.

(Says me after claiming MY piece!) ;)

Wonderful set-up Nick. Oh the dreams that that shop could fulfill. I can't believe how organized and clean it all is and that you manage to keep it that way. I know it's something I need to work on for myself and your shop is inspiring.

no doubt you run a clean shop Stu:thumbup:

Looks like you made a few additional purchases since the last time I was there...

His beautiful dog sure likes it there. Sweet shop Nick, almost serene!

How can so many of you guys be so surprised to see Nick's shop so clean? We all know how freakishly OCD he is. Indeed, that is a word he used himself (freak) when describing his completely finished ABS performance test knife. Remember that beauty?! Heck, if he's going to do a complete fit and finish on a knife he plans to destroy, keeping a few shavings vacuumed up from the occasional knife he makes every now and then shouldn't be too much of a bother. ;) :p :D

Happy New Year Nick!!!

HA!!! There are only about 6 things that are the same since then. :)

The first custom knife maker I ever met, Tiny Spencer, had a pretty nice/organized shop. He told me, "Clean shops produce clean knives." That stuck with me.

It has even more to do with how my brain works than anything else... I could throw stuff here and there, and next thing you know you would barely be able to walk through the shop, which doesn't sound like a good alternative! ;)
