Hi,
I was checking out some places online to place an order for some Spydercos (Military, Harpy & Starmate) to be send over to me in the UK.
I have found discountknives.com to be the cheapest....but cant reach the number and they havent replied to any of my enquiries...

ANyone know if this retailer still operates.

SOrry if this isn't the right place for this enquiry, but didn't know where else to post this

Ken,

Now you are going to start a whole bunch of people screaming! This can take one of two forms, either 1) an argument over which e-tailors are the best and why or 2) the whole concept of "who has the cheapest price and what that is doing to the retail knife store" (and full time e-store). Stand back, watch for falling glass.

Personally I have ordered about 5 knives from discountknives.com. They shipped promptly and I didn't have any problems. That was at least six months ago though which is a lifetime in internet years. I would start by checking out James at chaicutlery.com. His listed prices will be higher but there are reasons as he explains on the front page. He is a tremendous resource. If you find what you want somewhere else you can always e-mail him and tell him what you found. He might not be able to totally meet it but he'll try and it is nice to support somebody like James. I have bought things as well from bestknives.com and knivesexpress.com (which will get me in trouble now). I got my recent Shabaria from Ultimate Outdoors (ultout.com) since they were having a special sale. The best price often depends on what model you are looking for.

Tulsamal,

Thanks for the advice.

The last thing I want is for any heated exchanges here, I was just getting a bit frustrated trying to call a retailer on the phone from the UK and not being able to get thru!

I'll give the other places that you mentioned a try. But I can tell ya, the postage cost is the killer.....

Ken

Chaicuterly is a good place. I buy from MJ&S, Knifecenter and Cumberland (check links for addresses). No problems with shipping at all. I also live in Manchester, so please feel free to contact me if you need help.

Hey, Ken, if you do a search on discountknives.com in the archives, you will find a thread discussing the fact that discountknives.com allways ships quickly and no one has ever had any problems with them, but they are next to impossible to reach via phone. I ordered my 440v native from them on a Saturday and I received an e-mail confirmation of my order that following Monday. The knife arrived that Friday afternoon. I was very pleased with the service and response time. Just thought I would add my 2 cents worth.

Hi Flinx,
THanks for the advice! I'd still like to speak or at least communicate thru email before ordering! Oh well, I'll give them yet another email then shall I? Hehehe

Hi Ken,
About 90% of my Spyderco collection (20 knives) was purchased from Brian at Discount Knives.
I've enjoyed outstanding service, but we have only spoken to each other over the phone once.
It does not seem necessary with web-site and email communications.

Bill,
Funny you should say that cos I was emailing Brian to and fro, quite a number of times today and I placed the order with him this evening.....so hopefully, all will be sorted!

Great Ken!
Did you order a Toad, Military and Starmate as you were planning?
I'm certain Brian will take care of your delivery, as most dealers on this forum would.
Brian has a small but efficient shop, as well as an extensive inventory. I can't remember a backorder ever.
Last Christmas, Brian forgot to send (and charge for)a Victorinox that was an intended gift.
I informed him by email maybe 2 days before Christmas day.
Anyway, the knife arrived on Christmas Day via special delivery. Needless to say,I was blown away. My brother got his gift and Brian paid for the postage, which was 50% of the knife's price.
How's that for a service story???
I'm interested in the Military and Bob Lum.
Please let me know what you ordered and how you like them when they arrive.
The Lum is about as easy to come by as a date with Michelle Pfiffer

Bill,

I ordered a Starmate, Military, Merlin, SPydercard and the Sharpmaker. I'm reserving the Toad for my next buy along with the Meerkat and possibly the Civilian......!!

I decided that I would be happy enough with the Spydercard in my wallet for the moment.

I really cant wait to get the goodies....esp the Military and Starmate! I am gonna try at the ultra fast draw and open with the tip down knives.....

But I will let you know my thoughts when I get that parcel!

Ken
