I am still fairly new into knives and i want to get a collection started. I am beginning to make a shopping list for knives to either get or save up for. I figured I would ask you guys if there are any knives I need to get my hands on.

What do you want to do with your knives? Where do you live? How much do you want to spend?

Gotta know that.

Unless you want to just sit around in your living room looking at your knives.

Start with a Crkt Drifter, then a Spyderco Tenacious, then a RAT model 1.

Those are three VERY affordable knives from different companies to get your feet wet.

Maybe avkrampy wants more expensive knives. Maybe he wants collector knives. Maybe he wants traditional slipjoints, fixed blades, fillet knives, machetes, ulus, Japanese woodworking knives, etc etc etc.

Without more information...its like trying to answer the question "What's the best knife?"

Unanswerable.

But I'll try anyway. I suggest an original Scagel and a sharp knife...that's a great place to start.

Check out Kershaw, they have many great folders at reasonable prices. Then grab a BK-2 and have some fun.

MOAR INFO! Are you looking for fixed blades or folders? Manual or automatic? What size blades are you looking at ? Legal carry 3-4 inch or .....5' + blades? Users or safe queens?

There are a lot of great companies out there I would check out :

Benchmade
Microtech
Chris reeve knives
Rick hinderer
Zero tolerance

Pick a knife. Any knife at all, then go for it. There are so many great designs out there, so just pick one and see for yourself how you like it.

I don't think it's a good idea to make a list like this ahead of time because with each new knife, you'll come to new realizations about what you like and want in a knife. Like others have suggested, for now go with knives that are good on the budget and work up from there.

Best answer so far. Buy one then you'll know what you want out of a knife. You can then accordingly adjust your acquisition plan.
